My best friend growing up lives in DeSoto county. I wouldn't like it because I grew up in the delta but it is alright, interchangeable with any other suburbia.
I like visiting the attractions they have in the downtown area (Grizz, Redbirds, watch the river roll by, get something to eat, etc.).
The airport really isn't "huge" any more in a practical sense, since they aren't a hub. I believe everybody is jammed or will be into one terminal.
It is already built though and sooner or later somebody will need another satellite hub.
I don't believe Jackson has a big corporate presence like Memphis with Fed Ex, Autozone,etc.

Memphis and move east, Cordova, Lakeland, Arlington- if you have lots of bucks Germantown

Cordova really isn't an option anymore.
I moved from there to Collierville back in 2009. Love living in Collierville.
Germantown and east Memphis are both nice. I work in east Memphis.
There are also a lot of extremely good restaurants popping up all across Memphis and the suburbs. Not chains, but locals.
Anyone that bashes Memphis are likely just stupid or have never been here.
Oh, someone said that the Jackson zoo is better than Memphis I don't know what that person is smoking or snorting but Memphis has one of the top zoos in the country.

Madison is nice, areas in Rankin are nice. Jackson hasn't been a nice town in 35+ years. It has lost too many businesses, residents, most of its tax base, and most of its air service Jackson, like Memphis, is one of the most violent cities in America. But pound for pound, Jackson is more violent.
Memphis has FedEx, Graceland, music heritage, NBA, Beale St. and downtown nightlife. Jackson has none of that.
You can't even go to the zoo in Jackson without serious safety concerns. Jackson does have some nice museums, and old historic neighborhoods, but has turned into a wasteland outside of that.

Both are pretty crappy places as are most all cities in the south. when you throw in the suburbs of each, you can find some damn nice places to live and raise a family.
Jackson has Madison and Flowood....depends on your priorities as to which of these I would pick. The good thing is, Madison has public schools that are good enough not to have to deal with sending kids to private schools.
If I chose Memphis, I would probably try to live a mile or so south in Southaven, MS.

Memphis is a bigger Jackson...
I live in Jackson. Jackson has around 4 neighborhoods (or areas) that are great. Not including Ridgeland or Madison.
Memphis is better.

Seems like Memphis is the clear option here. I'm finishing up a Masters and looking to get out of Austin. It's great but becoming increasingly over crowded and pricey. I think Louisiana real estate is incredibly over priced, and i'm not sure why that is. Louisiana has always seemed to me like a "Mississippi with New Orleans" but no nice beaches. After looking at some of the home and real estate prices out there, i'm not looking to buy in LA. I'd still like to be close to my family, but the Louisiana real estate and shitty schools (unless you want to put your kid in private school for 5k a year or more).
Based on suggestions, i'll keep an eye on EMemphis, Germantown, and Collierville. Any other decent suburbs? I've read that Lakeland is nice too.

Wife is from Vicksburg and son went to college in Memphis.
Answer is clearly Memphis. I hate even stopping to get gas in Jackson, so we typically made our half-way stop in Madison.

Stick with Germantown or Collierville if you want the burbs. East Memphis or Midtown if you want to live in the city. Lakeland is ok, but you're starting to get further out. If you don't mind living further out I would probably consider Arlington over Lakeland

Memphis. Hands down. Outside of Smoky Mountain National Park, Memphis is probably my favorite place in Tennessee.

If you don't have kids, live in Midtown
If you have kids but still want to be fun, live in East Memphis but be prepared to pay private school tuition
If you have kids and don't mind living out live in Germantown or Collierville. I will say that Collierville has established its own school system away from the cesspool of Shelby County Schools, so that was our main reason for moving there as opposed to Germantown.
Lakeland is up and coming I think but certainly a step down from Germantown/Collierville
The best advice I can tell you is live in the 240 loop and if you go East of that make sure it is N. of Poplar Avenue or at the very least north of 385. I don't know why that is such a hard and fast rule but these are definitely the pockets.

Ive lived in both. I love Madison. Its not for everyone, but if you want a great suburban life with good schools and a nice family atmosphere, Madison > Memphis burbs.
If you want access to more events, sports, culture (the good kind), then Memphis burbs are better. That stuff just doesnt interest me.
No state income tax in Tennessee is a big deal as well, but the cost of living in Memphis is higher than Jackson area, so it balances out.

Both places suck, but I would choose Jackson.
You are closer to LSU and New Orleans, and Jackson's Fox affiliate shows all the Saints games. In Memphis, their Fox affiliate airs the Cowboys.

I actually like Memphis. The people from there are very friendly and down to earth. There's good food, plenty of live music, lots of big companies, and top shelf suburbs.
