I can't belieive the OP is in Austin and considering a move to Jxn. That must be one hell of a job.
I don't know much about Memphis, but I have a lot of experience w/ Jxn, If those are the choices and you like big cities, go to Memphis (suburbs). If you don't like big cities, go to MS and someplace like Madison or Brandon/reservoir. The Jackson area is actually not that bad if you stay out of the city itself.

Memphis much, much better than Jackson. Memphis has more and better attractions and entertainment for families. Just compare their zoos... You might not think an airport is important, but it definitely is. The Jackson airport... no Southwest, thus very limited on direct flights to anywhere.

Answer is clearly Memphis, TN.
Jackson is collapsing. Its a southern Detroit. Memphis still has big money and industry.
Both have nice burbs, but Memphis is an international city, meaning better dining, better amenities, etc.

Wife is from Jackson, her family now lives in Madison. I went to Ole Miss and now live in Nashville. I have extensive experience in both cities in the OP and lived in both for multiple short periods.

This. It's easy to hate on it but the city has come a long long way just in the past 3 years. I think the vibrancy of Nashville has put a lot of pressure on the city to attract young professionals and while we're not there yet it has certainly begun to shift.

Not necessarily. I would put my family's place in the Delta (~ 2 hours north of Jackson) against virtually any place, anywhere. I understand that Memphis is 30 minutes from great duck hunting, but I'll take the trade-off for saltwater proximity.

Jackson is Baton Rouge without a real college/football team. Memphis is bad too but at least there's stuff actually going on.
