Partially true. The H3N2 strain, which is most prevalent this year, is a particularly nasty strain regardless of mutation. The strain circulating in Australia was found to contain two mutations that made it particularly resistant, which is where the 10% number comes from that keeps getting thrown around. In the US, a good number of the cases have been H3N2, but early viral genotyping did not show the same pattern of mutation. Aside from the mutated strain, our vaccine should be nearly as effective as it was last year (low 40%).

I never get sick, but on New Years’ Eve, I started with a really bad sinusitis. Eventually led to a middle ear infection for which I needed an ENT doc to do a myringotomy (cut the eardrum to drain). Tested megative for flu but here it is almost a month later still with some lingering symptoms. I had to miss one week at work.

95% of the employees at my place of business got the flu shot and I know of nobody who has gotten anything buy a simple cold.

Yes...pertussis (whooping cough) cases not that unusual anymore (vaccines anyone?)

So far, my wife and my 2 kids have been flu free. My brother and his whole family caught it. My sister in law's kid caught it.
We've gone to the extremes of staying away from public places with the kids. We have a 3 year old and a 4 month old, so we've been quarantining ourselves to outdoor activities away from others and sitting in the back pew of church.
However, with my 3 year old in daycare, I feel it's inevitable that he will get it, but so far, we've been good. He's got a pretty good immune system. Got sick a bunch when he was a baby with sinus infections, etc... Now he's just an outbreak monkey. Gets us sick, but he's fine.
We've all gotten the flu shot, except the baby, of course.

Yeah not this ignorant stupidity again...I've gotten the shot every year for years now and can't remember last time I got the flu. It's virtually scientifically impossible to get the flu from the vaccine.

Yep, I forgot to list TB and sarcoidosis. Both on my menu o' potential ailments. Then i started wondering if i'd gotten asbestosis from working on my old houses.
the amazing thing about lymphoma is, my awful symptoms were totally gone after the first treatment--the next 11 were just to kill it dead, dead.

My wife is a dental hygienist (no pics) and they had a dumbass women come in the other day who was sick and had two kids sick at home with the flu. They sent that lady home, but what kinda person tries to get thier teeth cleaned when they have the flu?

It is not funny,but it is. I know it is just by chance but so far the only people who have got the flu at my work, have been the ones who got the shot. So far not a single person who didnt get the shot has got the flu yet lol. We were in our EOC meeting last week and our infection control nurse was giving her report and sad that only 51% of employees elected to get the shot this yr. And the way it has been going with a high percentage of them getting the flu she figures the % tha gets it next year will be even lower. I asked her out of the ones who got the shot, how many have gotten the flu... she said she would rather not give those numbers lol

The flu shot is made up of an inactivated form of the virus, it's impossible for it to cause someone to get the flu.
Now the intranasal vaccine is a live attenuated virus and in those with weak immune systems COULD reconstitute and cause the flu, but that's why we don't give it to those populations.

I am in my third week of this crap. First week was bad fever and coughing. I still have the cough with heavy flem. I have been doing doing the NyQuil before bed and able to sleep. When I was a kid I would get sick like this, but not in years.

Docs and nurses of the OT, I have a curious medical question.
Is it more or less plausible for an individual to be "immune" or "impervious" to illnesses due to being exposed naturally and not using modern medicine to make it go away?
I ask this because it seems like I only get sick once every 3 years and even though I like to think I'm a mutant, what's the logical explanation for this?

I kay get the flu tomorrow. But i am 34 and never had it. Worked in schools for a couple years and in hospital the last 8.. so i am very much exposed to it. I think some people are more vulnerable to it than others. i have extreme allergy and sinus probs year round, i wonder if this has something to do with it (weird i know)

Yea I didn't get the shot and haven't gotten the flu yet but everyone I know has had it and most of em got the shot. Lol idiots

This is correct. I had my flu shot but still got it. It is similar to B strain but much worse. I was hospitalized 5 days a couple of weeks ago from it. My temperature had eventually risen to 105 and stayed high for a while. Ice baths, nothing worked.
It was scary. This is the first time in over a decade I’ve had the flu. The Dr that saw me while I was in the hospital said this is the worst he’s ever seen it. The medical field is really concerned because it’s killing young, healthy adults.
