I got the flu shot. Wen't to the doc and tested negative after about 10 days of being sick but positive for bronchitis. Now, I'm running a 100 degree fever again.

frick I have to work. House payments, insurance and power bills don't stop when you're sick and my savings have been wiped out from buying a new car this month.

I've been getting yearly flu shots for 10 years now.

Have never gotten the flu...even after caring for multiple children with H1N1 in the 2009 pandemeic when it was really bad that year.

There are other respiratory illnesses besides the flu that make you run a fever. And technically...it is not a real fever until it is greater than 100.4.

Understandable....but your body needs rest in order to get better. Especially if you start running a fever.

I read an article a couple weeks ago in Time that due to mutations in the H3N2 strain, this year's flu shot is basically worthless.

Fwiw, I never got a flu shot before his year (only due to having a newborn) and I never got the flu either. Some people have better immune systems I suppose.

Each year, the labs that make flu vaccines try to predict the strains to provide the best protection. This year, there have been largely 2 strains causing this year's breakout. the vaccine is 70% effective against one and only 30% against the other, this is why so many people who got shots still got the flu.

Have you seen a doctor? Cold and sinus symptoms for over three weeks can be indicative of a sinus infection and you may at that point benefit from antibiotics.

RE: Flu shot. There is evidence that flu symptoms may be lessened in flu vaccine "failures". If you are very young or older (over 50) your risk of hospitalization or even dying from the flu is much greater than vaccination risk. The hospitals are packed with people with the flu and a large percentage of them were not vaccinated.

Stay home

I'm going down to my folk's house today. They have one of the those tankless water heaters and a tub that comes up to your ears. I'm going to soak in that hot water until this shite breaks loose.

Doesn't humira weaken your immune system?

It still can protect you against other strains though.

I wouldn't call it worthless. It still is better than NOT getting a shot. I've read they estimate it might be 30% effective this season(emphasis on estimate). A little protection is better than no protection.

I read they are seeing some promise in research for a universal flu vaccine for flu A. Testing in mice has shown it to be successful. They will start testing in ferrets next (supposed to have closer immune systems to humans). If that ever happens...game changer. No more yearly flu shots. While the virus rapidly mutates...there are common components in every flu virus. This universal vaccine would be aimed against those common components.

Humira is an immunosuppressant, so I doubt that.

Also if he has been having a cough for 3 weeks...have they tested him for pertussis?

We've seen a decent amount of pertussis at my hospital. Many times parents may pass it to their kids and not realize it. They didn't realize you need a booster vaccine as an adult to give you more protection against pertussis.

I don't want to alarm you, but if the bronchitis part keeps up much longer please get a (good) x-ray read by someone who knows what they're doing. If you have night sweats, this is especially true.

I was diagnosed with everything from bronchitis and adult-onset asthma, to walking pneumonia before they finally found giant lymph nodes in my chest. Stage IV Hodgkins. Good news is they knocked it out. But stay on top of your symptoms.
