It’s shocking to me how normalized receiving government assistance has become

The total cost of poverty assistance programs in America can add up to a shocking $1 trillion a year when combining both federal and state level program budgets.

quote:

On average 21 percent of Americans participate in at least one government assistance program.

These stats are for 2018, the most recent I could find. This is not at all about race, this is about people allowing themselves to become dependent on the government and just not caring.

When I was younger, receiving government assistance carried a negative stigma. It wasn’t something that people WANTED to be on. I remember an Eddie Murphy sketch where neighborhood kids made him cry because he was eating that “welfare burger”. That stigma seems to be gone. People are very open and even seem proud of how much they can get in government handouts.

Nothing like watching someone spend 4.00 on a Starbucks drink from the cooler & paying with a SNAP card

That’s what happens when you incentivize single mother baby factories.

It really is amazing how many people are on medicaid that have no business being on it and could easily afford private plans. That's the one that bothers me the most.

I know business owners and hairdressers in california who are on medi-cal (our version of medicaid here in CA)

Yeah and something like 45% don’t actually pay federal income tax at the end of the day IIRC

You mean like what the farmers get or the big bailouts for companies.

Why do you find it shocking?

I mean, what you are mentioning isn't really govt assistance. It's a pittance.

I disagree completely with them too.

Get the frick out of here with your gotcha crap. I’m against any and all govt assistance. From food stamps to bailouts to stimulus checks to farm subsidies.

All of it is fricking trash. The govt isn’t here to provide for you, the govt isn’t here to make your life comfortable. That’s YOUR job.

Agreed. We should start with getting rid of FEMA and not supporting the rebuilding of homes in hurricane prone areas

I just checked out at Rouse's and the sista in front of me paid for her basket full for $270 with EBT. they told her she couldn't use it for alcohol so she pulled out a stack of cash for that.

I was at the gas station a while ago buying beer and there as an elderly black woman in front of me buying 1 polar pop and 3 frozen drinks and she paid with a Louisiana Purchase card. I didn’t even think you could buy junk like that with food stamps.

Just wait till you realize that corporations are receiving handouts too and have the ability to pay off politicians and can donate more to a campaign than an actual voter.

Well the government is in full swing of taking away private business, therefore non government employment.

I don’t believe this really happened. Everyone knows you can’t buy alcohol with it. They only get $195 a month for 1 person and $354 a month for 2.

Similar incident is what prompted this post. I was just in a local convenience store, and a mutant-looking couple were in line behind me with a few snack items. The female spotted a box of Turtles candy bars on the counter and says, “I’m gonna get the whole box.” The male replied, “You don’t need all that, you can get some at Walmart.” Female comes back with, “I’m gonna pay for them with food stamps.”

End of discussion. She bought the entire box of candy bars.
