Yeah and something like 45% don’t actually pay federal income tax at the end of the day IIRC
Thanks to the Earned Income Tax Credit, which is not even part of the sum of the total assistance in OP. Don’t let people fool you into the welfare is food stamps bs. It’s the biggest business in the world

Senator Thom Tillis (R) North Carolina agrees, and told this lady she's SOL.

Louisiana acquired the Medicaid expansion program in 2016 - which made adults eligible for it depending on income
Disabled adults have always been able to get Medicare after receiving benefits for 2 years (as per Medicare’s website)
I’m not sure about Medicaid - each stare was/is different and when you applied for Disability- the worker should’ve told you whom to contact

It is said how normal it is for so many to get hand outs while not even making an attempt. The system needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. It’s also not surprising given the rise of interest in socialism / “democratic” socialism.

It’s shocking to me how ridiculously high health insurance, tuition, and the cost of living is for working people.

Most folks are like Major Major’s father when it comes to welfare. From Catch 22:
quote:
Major Major’s father was a sober God-fearing man whose idea of a good joke was to lie about his age. He was a longlimbed farmer, a God-fearing, freedom-loving, law-abiding rugged individualist who held that federal aid to anyone but farmers was creeping socialism. He advocated thrift and hard work and disapproved of loose women who turned him down.
His specialty was alfalfa, and he made a good thing out of not growing any. The government paid him well for every bushel of alfalfa he did not grow. The more alfalfa he did not grow, the more money the government gave him, and he spent every penny he didn’t earn on new land to increase the amount of alfalfa he did not produce. Major Major’s father worked without rest at not growing alfalfa. On long winter evenings he remained indoors and did not mend harness, and he sprang out of bed at the crack of noon every day just to make certain that the chores would not be done. He invested in land wisely and soon was not growing more alfalfa than any other man in the county. Neighbors sought him out for advice on all subjects, for he had made much money and was therefore wise. “As ye sow, so shall ye reap,” he counseled one and all, and everyone said, “Amen.”
Major Major’s father was an outspoken champion of economy in government, provided it did not interfere with the sacred duty of government to pay farmers as much as they could get for all the alfalfa they produced that no one else wanted or for not producing any alfalfa at all. He was a proud and independent man who was opposed to unemployment insurance and never hesitated to whine, whimper, wheedle and extort for as much as he could get from whomever he could.

Everyone hates government programs until mom and dad have to pay their own way for the nursing home, then every kid becomes a Medicaid expert and tried to defraud the system.
Again, Medicaid is generally a state program that receives federal dollars for underserved Children. I am fully aware some adults who have never done shite or who aren’t able to do shite do qualify.
However, Medicare, which is actually what you are referring to, is totally different. These people have paid into this bullshite program their entire lives, and your damn right they should become experts on it and get what they have rightfully paid for you fricking dildo. If the government doesn’t wanna provide it, then quit taking our money our entire working career. Got it? Good.

I’m currently stuck on Medicaid due to being laid off. I’m shocked it costs that much to the government because I’ve yet to be able to find a doctor or clinic who accepts it.

These stats are the most concerning
Generations of government benefit recipients.
quote:
43 percent of Americans signed up for welfare programs have been participating for over 3 years.
quote:
39 percent of children under the age of 18 participated in some form of government assistance program in 2012.

Also what is crazy is after Katrina, I watched many of my Republican friends and coworkers, who are very against the welfare state, stick their hands out and sop up every government assistance offered, needed or not.
I remember FEMA giving away generators and my friends asked if I wanted to ride with them. I already had 2 generators and they had them as well. I chose not to go and was laughed at for missing out on the "free" generators. But damn those folks on welfare.

It is, but he was talking about paying for parents in a nursing home. Medicare does not cover long term care.
Medicaid will pay for long term care in a nursing home after mom or pop spends all their non exempt assets to the point they are impoverished under the regs.
I’ve recently learned that they can go to a private pay assisted living facility, which is much nicer than a nursing home, and pay around 2800 to 3000 a month. If they have money and ability to make it in there, that beats the heck out of 5,000+ for a nursing home. Of course, if they are tapped out, a Medicaid funded nursing home is the only option.
