Ball turret gunner. Life expectancy of something like 4 missions and a good number of those were because they couldn't get out of the ball and were crushed when the rest of their crew made an emergency landing.

To put the question into context...in 1943, in any of these positions you have no idea which theater you would be fighting in.

quote:

Wrong. A, C, and D were in the ETO.

A. The 8th Army Air Force was created in February 1944. so...they weren't in the ETO in 1943.

C. I guess that the 101st knew they were going to Europe once they shipped over to England in early '44. Prior to that...the enlisted man had no idea where he would be going. So, if you were enlisting in 1943, I don't think you would actually know you were going to be fighting in Europe. So, they weren't in the ETO in 1943.

D. The 4th Armored Division didn't arrive in Europe until January 1944. So they weren't in the ETO in 1943.

Again...in 1943 as a volunteer enlistee, you didn't know where any of these would be fighting, save the 1st Marines.

Canada fought in WWII as well. They had the second hardest beach to take at D-Day behind Omaha Beach.

Being assigned as a ball turret gunner on a B-17 bomber crew with the 8th. Air Force

B. Being assigned to the 1st Marine Div. as a rifleman

C. Being assigned to the 101st Airborne Div. as an Infantryman

D. Being assigned to the 4th. Armored Div. as a tanker on an M4 Sherman

Conversely, if you had to choose to do one of the above, which one would it be and why?

I'm 6'3" and immediately eliminated from ball turret but I would have loved to pilto a B-17

They were in the ETO in 1943. Prior to Feb. 44 it was called VIII Bomber Command. They just changed names in 44.

I stand corrected...the VIII began in Europe in mid-42. The other two, were still training in the states in '43, however.

Based on deaths as a percentage of number of personnel during WWII

Marines 5.1% chance of death
Army 3.8% chance of death
Navy 1.9% chance of death

yep, thats a list of the worst of the worst places to be serving but of those choices "C" gives you the best chance to survive

You had a higher chance of dying in the 8th Air Force (which was part of the US Army) than you did in the Marines. In fact, the 8th Air Force suffered a total higher casualty count by itself than the entire Marine Corps combined.

Am I the only one who would be the most hesitant to be put in a tank? Let's get in a hot metal box on tracks and fire heavy guns at each other. Yeah, hard pass here.

A)

More airmen were lost in the 8th airforce than marines in combat during world war 2.

C would terrify me the most, and it’s also the one I’d pick.

There are 3 generations in my family with CIB's and 101st combat patches. I'm glad to be one of them.
