It's 1943, you're 18 years old, which would terrify you more?

A. Being assigned as a ball turret gunner on a B-17 bomber crew with the 8th. Air Force

B. Being assigned to the 1st Marine Div. as a rifleman

C. Being assigned to the 101st Airborne Div. as an Infantryman

D. Being assigned to the 4th. Armored Div. as a tanker on an M4 Sherman

Conversely, if you had to choose to do one of the above, which one would it be and why?

Do not want
A or B

Want
C- you’d be fighting with the best (and not against the Japs)

Statistically speaking, A would be the most dangerous

Bomber crews had the highest fatality rate if I remember correctly.

To put the question into context...in 1943, in any of these positions you have no idea which theater you would be fighting in.

So...not knowing what was ahead for any of these positions, I would choose Airborne. You get an extra $50 per month (essentially double salary of the other positions).

I'd take whichever one the government assigned me to after volunteering because I'm not a pussy.

Kidding. I'm a giant vagina. I'd probably cry in a hole somewhere. Kudos and bravo to the greatest generation who volunteered to go through hell for the rest of us.

I'd say option A. Have you seen how small those things are? And exposed? If that B-17 goes down and you somehow can't get out of the turret, it's a long way down to contemplate your death.

You are correct. In fact, the 8th Air Force by itself suffered more casualties than the entire Marine Corps did in the Pacific Theater over the course of the war.

Wrong. A, C, and D were in the ETO.
