C. Being assigned to the 101st Airborne Div. as an Infantryman

D. Being assigned to the 4th. Armored Div. as a tanker on an M4 Sherman

Conversely, if you had to choose to do one of the above, which one would it be and why?

You have an excellent chance of dying with any of these options. I'm gonna take my chances and go with 101st Airborne Infantryman. Probably a fatal decision, but if I get caught behind enemy lines, I'd have the best chance of survival, as a POW.

My grandfather manned that job in the pacific theatre.

“A” would probably have the lowest chance of survival. A lot of B-17s in the 8th Air Force did not finish their 25 missions, and the ball turret had a good chance of getting shot by flak/German fighter or getting destroyed in a belly landing.

Statistically speaking, A would be the most dangerous

Nice to be able to bang broads and live off steak and beer between missions though.

Another thing about the ball turret: if the plane is hit and is going down, is there even a way for that guy to bail out with a parachute?

Technically, yes. They entered the ball turret through a door from the outside, here is an example.

But that door was locked once he was inside and he could not reopen it. They didn’t put latches on the inside because even if they were there, he could not have reached back to them. Once inside the turret he was basically in the fetal position like this...

... and extremely cramped. Most ball turret gunners did not have room for a parachute so one was stored outside the turret top hatch for them. It was this top hatch they opened to the interior of the bomber that was the gunner’s only escape during flight. Here is an example of this door.

But just as he could not open the bottom door to the outside, he likewise could not open the top door to the interior of the bomber. Someone else had to open it up and help him out.

That seems like it could have been designed much better.

That would put you in the 101st. You now have to survive fighting the elite of the German military which includes; 1st SS Panzer Division, Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler, Führerbegleitbrigade, 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend, and the 9th SS Panzer Division Hohenstaufen.
But if you are successful your wish will be granted.

It, along with the Nordon bombsight were both considered the two most technological wonders of American heavy bombers. The reason it was made so small was to reduce the amount of drag it created. They made it as small as possible for that reason.

ETA: and if you had the bad luck of being the smallest guy on your crew, guess where you get assigned?

Honestly, being on a merchant marine vessel or in the navy. I hate the idea of being torpedoed in the middle of the night with nothing I can do.

Jimmy Stewart flew 20 combat missions in the 8th AF. He was initially denied entry into the Army because his weight was too low for his height. He actually gained weight so he could get in. That generation just amazes me.
