Wouldn’t care for it. My kids know to say Mr./Ms. and so do the other kids in our area. The Dads that have coached them in sports will still get called “Coach” a good bit which I think is cool.

In an effort to teach your kid about respect you’re asking him to call a grown man by a different name than that man would like to be called.

Okay.

My kids say yes sir/ma’am, Mr/Mrs, etc, by default, but respecting others is about respecting their wishes too.

That’s not what’s happening here, but yes, I agree.

Wife's friend did the same with my kids. Not Miss _____ but just _______. Weird, but that's her choice.

Grandkids calling grandparents by their first name is something altogether different.

It's unlikely that current young parents have raised any children to adulthood yet.

I still call my friends dads Mr. and I’m over 50. My sons friends all call me Mr Squatch.

Even little things like this create an air of respect…like opening the door for your wife and other women or insisting they order first at a restaurant.

I agree OP.

Yeah, this thread is full of a bunch of people who raised shitty kids themselves and are shocked that those kids are now shitty parents.

Respect would be calling the person what they want to be called and honoring their request.

Doing what you feel is best depite others wishes is selfish and disrespectful.

I’ve been out of high school for almost 25 years. Everytime I see my high school band director I still call him Mr. He’s told me many times “Prez you are 40. You can call me by my name. “

Nope. Too Weird.

I agree if he asks my son to call him by his first name then my son should do it, that's my whole point. I teach my son to do what the adults in charge tell him to do. However, if I am there then I have no problem telling the Dad it's not happening because thats not how I'm raising him. I didnt say any of that in front of my kid either. If a parent is trying to teach their kid manners only a loser would tell the kid to do different because it undermines their parents wishes. It's basically saying "Hey I know your parents are making you say that, but I think that's dumb so you don't have to do it with me."
