Some of it is, yes. But in this culture of overzealous virtue signaling you have adults manipulating their children as the object of the parents desire to virtue signal. Then, you have the current desire to make "victims" heroic which I think many are latching on trying to make themselves out to be heroic victims.

I've actually had the opportunity to be around a few trans people, both male to female and female to male, working with a company that owns sober living houses that I used to be a manager of.
It's been my experience that a high percentage of them are mentally ill. Again, in my experience, I'd say about 90% of the ones I encountered, had some form of mental illness, which included them taking a lot of meds for their mental illnesses. Not only that, the interactions with the majority of them were quite different than with a person who is even LGB. A small portion of them were outgoing and seemed to be somewhat normal, but the rest had problems even communicating with people normally and just doing normal things like being able to hold down jobs.
I'd say during my time working there, I dealt with 20-25 of them, as this company was one of the few that allowed transgendered addicts to dwell in their homes, so we actually had quite a few. To me, it was a sad thing to see because I think most had mental health issues that were just prescribed medications and left to themselves, which just created more problems, instead of them maybe getting some counseling to go along with the medications.
I think that anyone that tries to deny that the majority of them are not mentally ill just hasn't spent time with any of them and are probably regurgitating some talking points that they heard.

I had one of them things in a class with me one semester and I didn't know what to call it cause it was in that middle in-between stage where you cant really tell which way side they're leaning towards so wtf am I supposed to do

More precisely, transgenderism is a brain defect. The brain is an organ. All organs can potentially become defective when developing in the womb. When the brain doesn’t complete its transformation during development of the male fetus, a child is born with a male body and a female brain. The reverse can also happen.
Transgenderism is a rare occurrence. People who suffer this defect live miserable lives in societies that misunderstand it and condemn it. There is presently no cure for the condition. Many sufferers try to change their bodies to fit the gender of their brains but that often makes their situations worse. A better solution would be a physical procedure that changes their brains to match their bodies. I have no idea if any research is being done, however.
