I started tipping in places I normally wouldn't when ordering pickup. Not much maybe just a dollar or two so they don't spit in my food

Anywhere you ask for a tip BEFORE I receive the service you aren’t getting squat.
If I have to go up to the counter to order my food and pay for and you won’t get a dime.

But, I stopped going out and we cook every meal at home now.
My wife has always cooked her arse off and is excellent at it. We just remodeled the whole house and I rewarded her with a Wolf induction range/oven.
We are both happy.
And I don't have to tip 20 somethings with a humanities degree.

I’ll be the boards piece of shite
I’ve stopped tipping all together. I don’t care anymore.
Last time I went out to eat I tipped $5 on a $100 bill. Server sucked, food was shite (and expensive), frick em

tip fatigue is certainly part of it but it's equally due to the plummet in the quality of customer service; any more it's a shock when you get really excellent customer service

What restaurants do this?

If I stand to place my order I never tip. If you wait on my I tip. Base in 20% if you suck I’ll leave less if you are great I’ll do 25%

I would much prefer to pay another 5-20 for a meal with the tip built into the overall cost, than to tip separately

If you're tipping because you're concerned they'll spit in your food if you don't, consider going to another restaurant.

I have no issue with tipping, I worked in the service industry and back when I did it was my livelihood.
But you need to be aware it's not always the way it used to be. I went out twice this weekend where the tip was already included on the bill, but you better look because if you don't you'll double down and the default was 18% and 20%.
And also the hourly wage is not always what the standard was back in my day.
On example I go to about 2-3 series a year at Wrigley Field and I always tipped the concessions folks like I do all bartenders but come to find out they were already making like $16 an our and they were last year striking for get a raised. So I started tipping them $1 after I found that out.

If I tip you at the coffeeshop, and then you take 20 minutes to make my drink anyways, that leaves me with a pretty sour taste in my mouth. Like, what did I tip you for? It wasn't because my drink was so difficult to make, it was to motivate you to get off your arse and make it.
I mean, if you come in with 30 people in front of you, you shouldnt be surprised if the barista is in the weeds. Which is about the only time Ive had to wait 20 minutes for a drink.

If I’m serving my own food, or standing up to order it, I’m probably not tipping.

I’m just more aware of the level of service. Like ordering a couple of draft beers, pulling on a handle and filling a glass, what’s that merit? Versus a cocktail or anything that requires more than 10 seconds of effort. I almost always tip a little and usually default 20% for actual service.

I wonder if your bartender friend is also seeing a decline in sales. Drink prices are through the roof these days and usually cost more than the food. I'm not tipping bartenders lately but it's because I'm not ordering drinks.
I've been learning to make different drinks at home and it's honestly pretty fun especially when I have people over.

So in Vegas for the LSU game poolside at Ceasars, so I know drinks are going to be expensive. But I'm chilling with friends, the talent at the pool is fantastic, so I'm willing to pay a bit more.
It's Sunday morning, hanging a bit so I order two bloody mary's for a friend and me I owed him from the night before. I pull out a $50 to pay and he informs me it's $84. I almost seized! I said you gotta be frickin kidding me he says yeah I know it's crazy....I said yeah you damn right it is but the drinks were poured and for whatever reason I capitulated, looking back wished i had walked away an refused to pay but I didn't, on me.
So I pull out a $100 then the Cat asks me if I want change?!!! I said hell yeah dude I'm tipping you for what the drink should be not the ridiculous price you just charged me.

We are going to get downvoted but I'm with you. Pay people what the market didtates and let tips go back to being for above average or great service. Having to tip to keep people from fricking with your product was the last straw for me.

Alcohol has huge profit margins and keeps a lot of places open that would close if food only.

Where does this myth come from?
BOH doesnt give AF about FOH tips. And thats the shite that would get you fired on the spot as a cook.
If its a service counter/bar/coffee shop, you can stand there and watch em.

There have been plenty of service industry people on this very board talk about it. Especially Uber Eats drivers.
