Im going with the k-cup inventor

quote:

Keurig Green Mountain, which manufactures coffee makers and instant flavor pods, has agreed to be purchased for $13.9 billion

Much of that money came thanks to K-Cups, the coffee-in-a-pod system invented by cofounder John Sylvan.

But Syvlan, who sold his stake in the company for $50,000 in 1997, doesn't own the machine.

No telling how much his share was... but $50k?

The founder of Victoria's Secret sold the company in the early 80s for $1 million.

Of course, there is no way to know if the company would have grown into what it is today if it had remained with the original founder. However, the guy eventually jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge.

Me going to grad school is the biggest financial blunder of all time.

Me getting married is the second biggest financial blunder of all time.

Me having kids is the third biggest financial blunder of all time.

Actually, me getting married is probably the biggest.

Blockbuster not buying out Netflix strikes me as much worse. Blockbuster apparently had a problem with Netflix's policies in not ripping off their customers at every given opportunity.

As Blockbuster was principally owned by Wayne Huizenga (who owned garbage cartage Waste Management INC) and George Dean Johnson (who owned payday lender AdvanceAmerica) I highly doubt business ethics played any part at all.

Russia sold us Alaska even cheaper. I think it was less than 2 cents an acre

AOL-TimeWarner merger is one of the worst

$99B writeoff in 2002

AOL stock went from $200B to $20B in a just few months after the merger.

This is correct. Louisiana Purchase was around 2.5 or 3 cents per acre. The Alaska purchase was definitely cheaper.

Motorola doubling down on flip phones instead of moving toward smartphones in 2007 was also a pretty bad decision.

They are making a good comeback with their new smartphones.

Blackberry with Blackberry Messenger.

Before FB messenger and Whatsapp there was BBM and it ruled. BB made three huge blunders. Kept it for BB phones only as they crashed, kept them tied to PIN numbers instead of phone numbers, and didn't spin it off.

WHy is it on the list? FB bought Whatsapp for $20 billion. That could've been BBM.

Maybe so but significance wise Louisiana purchase was much more monumental than Alaska. It opened us up to the west coast.

Side note I'm taking my first trip to Alaska this summer and can't be more excited about it.

Also if the Ottoman empire could have stayed together for another 10-20 years, it would have so much of the worlds oil supply, they would have been unstoppable.

Ross Perot not buying Microsoft in 1979 for $50 mill is up there.

A personal favorite though not nearly in the same league is the Mets contract with Bobby Bonilla. Instead of paying him the $5.9 mill they owed him for his last year they opted to pay $1.9 mill/year for 25 years. He will still be hitting their books until 2035.

That guy was desperate for money it sounds like. A guy worth millions? Seems he would have recognized Facebook's superior platform. When you have money, you have the luxury of weighing your options and taking risks.
