I was one ACT point away from a full ride to ULM. Changed the standard from a 32 to a 31 the next year which wouldve given me a full.

If I was a Louisiana senior in high school and had exceptional grades my order would be this:

1. Any Ivy League school that offered a full scholarship, books and living expenses

2. University of Florida or University of Texas on full scholarship

3. Stanford - would have to be a perfect match with my major

4. Ole Miss - they are recruiting Louisiana students hard these days and making the offers worthwhile

5. LSU - the whole TOPS thing makes me nervous - LSU had a great honors program in the 90s - don't know much about it now.

6. Louisiana Tech - if I wanted to focus on English or nano technology, this school would get a serious look. Like LSU, they had a tremendous honors program in the early 90s...shockingly good for a mid size school.

7. Partial scholarship to Ivy League school - it would have to be the right fit and a major where I could pay off the debt.

Edit - dumbassness kicked in - Naval Academy would be #1

Also, people don't realize how affordable many Ivy League and other top schools can be. At places like Stanford and Harvard, for instance, if your family's income is under $125-150K, tuition may be waived. And within certain income thresholds, you only pay a small percentage of tuition.

Auburn, Mississippi State, and Alabama will definitely beat that if your kid has a 33 on the ACT. Mississippi State would would pay full tuition.

It was, uh... a few years ago... but I had a 31 on the ACT, a non-exceptional GPA and my scholly at State was:

Tuition
OOS Tuition
Room and Board
$1500 per semester stipend
Workstudy

Plus, my family didn't have a ton of money, so I had some Pell Grant dollars in there at some point.

I have read that most Ivy League schools have foundations flush with cash...making the dream of enrolling a real chance.

That was not the case 25 years ago. Gives my kids hope.

I got a full ride out-of-state scholarship to law school. Didn't even have to maintain a certain GPA. Just pass.

LSU paid my wife to go to school. Topps was obviously a part of it but she had scholarships to cover all other expenses and enough left over to put about 1k a semester in her pocket

Yeah, mine wasn't funded by TOPS but by a judge's memorial fund.

I went to LSU from 06-11 and I was out of state coming from Mississippi. Made a 30 on my act with a 4.0 and I had a full ride with about 2 grand coming back that was extra. Of course tuition has changed dramatically since then. The out of state tuition at LSU is ridiculous now. But I'm sure the scholarships have at least reflected this change some too so it should still be possibly if you do well on the ACT.

LSU did not cut TOPS. The State of Louisiana cut TOPS and LSU doesn't have a cool 30 million extra laying around to cover the difference.

That being said, LSU's scholarships are behind the curve, but there is only so much money right now. If the state quits cutting higher ed budgets, maybe more money can be shifted toward scholarships.

Because the cuts over the past few years have been minimal, LSU added 4 new scholarship programs for non-residents and children of alumni.

Applied to lsu, nichols, and Harvard.

Got into all three.

I just wanted to say I applied to Harvard and the Harvard on the Bayou.

Yes. My daughter is up for a full ride to Loyola in Nola. She got accepted to LSU already and has most of her costs covered with scholarships, but Loyola is where she really wants to go.

LSU slacks on the scholorship/full ride game. Bama destroys them in that regard

Not sure, I graduated with a 2.4 in high school and made a 22 on ACT. I went to ULM and then dropped out after 2 years majoring in history b/c it got too expensive and I didn't want a loan

All of you have been very helpful, and have given me optimism.

I guess I hadn't thought about it a lot, but obviously ACT score is heavy factor. We'll get a good indication of that in a couple of months. She usually tests pretty good... If I recall, I had a 24... can't even imagine over a 30, but she's waaaay smarter than me.

Her desired major is worth another thread. Work on that soon enough, though.
