Is there a more obscure, “who gives a shite” area of world than Central Asia?

If you were to survey the population of the world on knowledge of an area’s culture, history, politics, etc....this region would come in dead last

Yes I know Borat helped a bit, but it’s a sad indictment that most of our knowledge files from a comedy film

Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan.....ask the vast majority of people on earth not from these areas to tell you one fact about these nations

ah the stans

where they have random deposits of valuable resources and random, insane dictators

*ETA:

LINK

quote:

Niyazov outlawed beards on men and makeup on television anchors, and prohibited both chewing tobacco and lip-syncing on Turkmenistan soil. In lieu of tobacco, he suggested that people chew on bones, which he argued would strengthen their teeth. The types of bones and how to obtain them were left to the imagination of the populace.

He also wrote a book called Ruhnama, which meant "Book of the Soul." Students were required to study it in schools and mosques had to give it equal respect to the Quran or be demolished. Memorization of the book was even required for getting a driver's license. Niyazov told his people that as a result of a pact made between him and Allah, anybody who read his book three times would automatically go to heaven.

Then in 2005, Niyazov launched a copy of it into space for aliens to read. This is as good a time as any to mention that Niyazov was illiterate.

Finally, to cement his legacy of batshit lunacy, he ordered that an ice palace be built in the capital of Turkmenistan, which as you may know is a desert country.

Definitely the most who gives a shite. Central Africa gives it a good run for the money though.

I just hired a developer from Uzbekistan. He's a REALLY weird fella, but crazy smart.

He remembers when it was the Soviet Union and his stories of the aftermath from the collapse are pretty cool.

But to back up your point, he is from there, and even he says there it is in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do.

ETA:

He wore a suit to the interview that looked like it came off the rack at Sears in 1985 and hasn't been washed since. It was a hard no on first impression.

Then he showed his technical abilities and I thought "well, at least this will be entertaining".

I have some friends that lived there for awhile and they absolutely loved it. A lot of it was surprisingly beautiful.

Being a 1000 miles from nowhere might have something to do with it.

At least the average person knows the people of central Africa are black

Ask Americans what central Asians look like and you would get a wide array of answers

Well, other than the nomads who would periodically ride down, rape and plunder, and shake up the surrounding regions
