There has been a massive influx from NOLA East the past 5-10 years as there have been large developments of Section 8 housing. Huge neighborhood right across the street from Lakeshore Estates, as well as a few on the service road by the dealerships on that side of town.

With that said, NHS is a great school system and Eden Isle area is good living. If your kids are in school keep them away from Salmen. Lost its prestige after Katrina. The fairer folk in that area borrow addresses in another district or send their kids to private school.

I will never understand why town officials like to built these developments and ruin things. Nothing to be gained and schools ruined.

It was decent pre-Katrina. Then the pre-Katrina New Orleans East moved there.

Born, raised and still live here. Not great, but not terrible. Nothing like it was when I was a kid though. Took a big downward turn after Katrina. Only thing keeping me here is my mom. I can't move my kids away from her.

Nor do I.

As others have mentioned and with which I agree, Slidell took a step backward after Katrina and especially on the south side of town (around Salmen HS). This was all exacerbated by the apartment complex by Pontchartrain and Spartan and Section 8s. Kings Point was on the decline pre-Katrina.

Same here, we moved to Covington 8 years ago, and have not encountered any snobs. Maybe it's because many people have moved here from Slidell, Metairie, Lakeview, etc... to escape the incoming crime to their communities.

Your application has just been denied. Better luck next time

Can anyone explain this to me? I'm stumped

There's a reason why you can get a really "nice" house, really cheap. Before you buy a house out there look at the crime stats as well as the flood premiums.

I live in Abita. The crime stats are actually worse in Covington than Slidell. In terms of crime, it goes like this. Mandeville, Slidell and then Covington pulling up the rear.

Probably because you said the I-12 instead of just I-12, I guess they thought they were being funny

Ah. It's a Los Angeles thing. I lived there for 28 years and all the Los Angeles freeways are referred to by the locals "the" as in the 101, the 5, the 405, etc

Old habits are hard to break

Slidell has to be viewed in parcels. If you want a home in a subdivision (and NHS/Honey Island/Cypress Cove school district) The Bluffs and Turtle Creek are good choices. Lake Village and Crossgates are still OK. Some nice waterfront places over on the west side but school gets dicier (unless you pick parochial or private) and chances of home still being there after a hurricane of course decrease.

Why move to Slidell when you can travel 15 more minutes east?

Crime in North Covington, Claiborne Hill area.
Covington area (unincorporated area by Hwy 21) is totally safe. It borders with Madisonville.

Also, purchase a home above I-12, whether in Slidell, Covington, etc.

Below I-12 - flooding.

I would go to Bay St Louis or go farther west/north to other north shore towns.

Because you’re not thinking of the entire town when you’re thinking short term
