Is owning a nice pen a sign of being pretentious?

I was meeting with someone last week and when he signed some paperwork, he pulled out a Mont Blanc from his suit pocket rather than use whatever pen was already sitting on the table.
Part of me thought it was an OT baller move, the other part of me thought it came off slightly pretentious. I'm guessing it was the jealously in me that felt the latter.
So do you OT ballers use a Mont Blanc or nicer pen, or is it the kind of thing only pretentious people own?

I had to get a nice pen. The cheap one I bought the antelopes were able to jump the fence

It’s one of those things that no one really cares about but it makes the people that buy them feel important or special.

If he likes to write (hand written letters, notes), he knows the difference in quality. It's also nice not getting everyone else's germs.
They are somewhat common gift items in the business world, too.

A true baller is comfortable with these. Best pens ever made.

The same question could be asked about clothes, cars, etc. Some people just like better things. Don't worry about it.

I have several nice pens. They’ve all been gifts.
I don’t think it’s pretentious at all.
It would be pretentious to break out an ink bottle and fountain pen and write in calligraphy.

Never trust someone that uses a pen that once had a chain attached to it.

I try to use the same style pen when I sign documents because it’s easy to see that the signature is actually mine. Pretty common in business practice where you have to sign important documents.

If anybody believes the pen I'm carrying indicates something negative about me, I probably won't notice. If I do, I'll make a mental note to not trust that person with anything important.

I use a cross pen for everyday. It's not the same thing as Mont Blanc, but it's definitely a lot fancier than your bic. It was a gift from a friend. His reasoning for why he thought it was a worthwhile gift is that he used to lose a lot of cheap pens, but a more expensive pen gave him extra motivation to keep track of it. I think there's something to it. I'll probably never go back to using cheap pens.

Most of my pens usually have some type of business stamped on them...

Wouldn’t know a Mont Blanc or any other fancy pen if I saw it

This is the best pen ever made. The cap also has nice tip that can be used to remove ear wax.

Dilettantes.
I use a quill.

I have nice pens but that's because I like pens/writing.
I do think the scenario you described would be kinda douchey. I've probably done something like that before, but it has more to do with wanting to put a nice pen to use than it does impressing anyone.
