I think for the majority of people it is the ultimate excuse, but for those that truly do suffer from some form of poor mental health it's really sad to watch. I learned a lot watching one of best friends have mental health issues seemingly pop up out of nowhere in mid-30's

Damn straight!.... Mental health is a real issue. But i can promise you that you will know it when you actually see it.

Mental health can be used as an excuse just like lots of things (racism, regligion, etc). That doesn't mean that mental health is all bogus.

Sure,
just as it’s easy to dismiss the drain that fraudulent claims of mental health disorders have on our system; they cheapen genuine examples of mental health disorders, and lessen buy-in by what would perhaps otherwise be a sympathetic population.

I still think racism is the best excuse for everything but not everyone can play it.

Yes, I was once like most here "Oh, its BS, they are just weak or lazy, blah blah"
Until someone in my family got help for depression and they became a totally different person after being treated. For the good that is.

They probably talk trash because they have anxiety and depression which is so easy to fix SSRI’s have little to no side effects. Please bitch about schizophrenia, bipolar or PTSD instead. Trust me. I know.

Yes and no.
Legit anxiety issues are debilitating but using mental health to quit doing something is a weak arse excuse. Life is tough and it’s never gonna be easy all the time.
So quoting everytime it gets tough and saying my mental health is bad is BS. All you are at that point is a quitter.

A lot of mental health issues could be fixed with exercise and eating good foods. Also could be fixed with making sure hormone levels are balanced before throwing people on SSRI’s and other anti-depressants.
We have a society that is over medicated. I always get a chuckle when people think they would last during an apocalypse. All the folks that couldn’t suck down their pain meds and Xanax wouldn’t last more than a day
All contributing factors.
Thinking that we optimized the work schedule for human success 100 years ago is also not ideal though. We excuse a lot of shite expectations from the work world as employee mental health issues too.
As with anything, it’s imperfect and both sides need to continue growing with changing expectations.

I’m sorry, I can’t come into work today or I can’t fulfilled my commitments due to my mental health. I need some personal time….. wtf
Only in the US do people put their employer first. Who cares. If someone needs personal time, they’re better off taking it than being miserable to everyone else at work.

The world needed bullies. This is what happens when you remove that element.

I think mental health has been ignored for a long time, which is why the business climate has become so impersonal and disconnected.
But people abuse the shite out of it too.

On the one hand, if you actually have serious mental health issues, no it’s not. If you haven’t actually experienced it, it’s hard to describe but there can be a number of unconsidered side effects. When I get in one of my moods, it’s almost a physical pain. You can feel the chemical imbalance as your brain gasps for the chemicals for none to be found. It is extremely unpleasant.
On the other hand, I try very hard to not let any of my personal issues effect others and I try to be as reliable as possible. Usually I just say something like “hey, I need some guidance here. Excuse me having trouble with x. Can you point me in the right direction.”

If it is, then we are all innocent, because we are all crazy to some degree.

It is the new ‘bad back’.

Sure some people abuse the system but there are a ton of people that have real issues. The people saying "toughen up" and "we need bullying" are obviously blessed enough not to have ever experienced any sort of real mental health issues with themselves or their family members. Ignorance is bliss I guess.
