Is lying still considered a sin or "bad" at all these days?Posted by Methuselah
on 11/26/20 at 6:56 pm

I know lying has been around since language was invented, but it seems like there was a time when society at least pretended to frown upon it. Rules, religious edicts and social mores all forbid it.
Now it seems like everyone from national leaders and politicians to tons of people on message boards and social media pretty much use it interchangeably with the truth without any thought whatsoever.
So, is there any stigma to just outright lying all of the time anymore?

People lied a lot "back in the day", too.

Sin hasn't changed, just our justification for committing it.

Lying nowadays has evolved into a synonym for "you offended me".

Nah. I think the normalization of it is a post boomer phenomenon. Sure, they had people that were considered pathological liars before, but they were pretty much shunned or at least politely avoided.

Dim’s don’t believe in God, much less sins. They have no morals therefore lying is cool.

I wish a buck was still silver. It was back when the country was strong.

Man doesn’t set the standards for sin, God does. He never changes. If a sin gets “normalized” it’s because man moves away from God.

It is if you consider integrity valuable. Being honest is healthier than being dishonest and is easier to deal with in the long run, IMO.

If there is a God, he is a cruel a-hole and undeserving of our worship.

Opened thread because I read it as lying still. Thought maybe my first wife had joined tRant.

I don’t think the issue was as much the degree of lying as much as the degree of social stigma attached to it. And it has undoubtedly lessened. It was just a dozen years ago that “journalists” caught dishing out in plain lies were shamed or even fired (rightfully so), like Dan Rather. Heck just 5 years ago Brian Williams was hugely shamed (and I think fired) when years of lies kinda culminated at once.
But now? Countless plain lies are told on CNN and MSNBC every day with apparently no shame or recourse.
