A lot of good thoughts here, if they’re true.

I too often catch myself telling someone in a manner of speaking “to be honest with you” and it bothers me. Does that tell the person I’m talking to that I haven’t always been honest with them? How can they trust me now that I am just saying that I’m now being honest with them?

Yes, lying seems to be more acceptable these days and almost expected in political circles.

Don't make a habit of lying and you'll never have to try and remember what you said.

To most normal Americans it’s still very much frowned upon. For progressives, especially those in politics and the media, it’s as normal and natural as breathing.

Ahh yes, the right wing media, Trump, and their followers are all above lying....does lying to yourself count as lying?

It's still a sin, and a bad thing to do if that is what you are asking. Do people care very much anymore about truth, no.

I’ve always wonder what someone who thinks like this will think when they find out that everything in the Bible is true and they face judgment and are faced with being thrown into the lake of fire.

I know you don’t believe in any of that, but if it is all true (I believe it is) what will you think in that moment?

It is in the job description for politicians and other criminals, but the rest of us are generally held to a higher standard.

What about all of those people who don't even know what the bible is, or were raised to beleive in different writings or gods. What will they think?

It's amazing how short sighted people are about religion and how ridiculous it all is.

Truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies.

This is the post-fact era. There is no such thing as a lie.

What if you went to your girlfriend's families house for dinner and the food was bad and your girlfriend's mom asked you if it was good? Unless you are a complete autist I'm betting you would say it was. Did you just sin?

After Trump, evangelicals have normalized a lot of things that used to be "sins", lying is a main one

I can’t pretend to know the answer to your question. How God deals with those people is for him to know.

One time as part of a comedy radio show, they were playing clips from this guy in the 70s on how to pick up women. One of the things he openly advocated was lying to them about your job/status. Also judging by movies and TV shows, it seems like this type of behavior was way more prevalent/accepted then. I dislike when people try to act as if everything was peaches and cream back in the day. There were serial killers, mass shootings etc, going back to the 20s at least. All of this “these type of things never used to happen, everyone was so great and moral compared to now, is largely a bunch of bullshite.

Because I don’t know how God deals with certain situations?

I believe Jesus is the only pathway to Heaven. I don’t know exactly how God looks at a person who has hypothetically never even heard of Jesus, though. Everything he does is just, so I know he has a way of dealing with this exact situation, whatever that way is.

So, is there any stigma to just outright lying all of the time anymore?

Just from over half of the population. The other 47 percent eats it up.
