Is it worth it to ‘organize your shop’ after having used it for awhile?

When your first put your stuff into your shop (or garage) you put things in rough places where you thought they should go. After some time your mind associated those places with those things.

If you try to organize the space, are you doing it because it will help you find things, or because external entities think you should have things a certain way?

Was your mind’s first pass the best for you as an individual? Can you find things easily after ‘organizing’ from your initial setup?

My shop is so organized that I get accused of being OCD. There is one thing that drives me crazy - not being bale to find a tool when I need it - I hate wasting time looking for shite. A man's shop should always be organized - if it's not you're not doing things right.

I clean mine up once a month or so. I designate a spot for everything and the only time I can't find what I'm looking for is after I've used the item and didn't put it where it belonged. I don't understand how some people can just put things randomly and keep track of where they are.

Or a great excuse to get away from your wife for a while.

“Sorry babe. The shop needs organizing and I won’t be able to watch 90 day fiancé with you tonight as much as I enjoy that.”

My Dad—career-military officer—used to drive me crazy when I was a kid with “the last step.” That’s the final part of any task, putting away whatever you used, the scissors, the tape, hammer, etc. That way you know where they are for next time. I rolled my eves over it for years but it’s one of my best childhood lessons. Makes life much simpler.

I’ve told some friends about “the last step” and they reported that their children now hate that phrase too. Full circle.

That's funny - my Dad was the exact same way and I thought he was a jerk for demanding that tools get put away properly. Now I'm having the same issues with convincing people to put things away properly. I have one major rule in my house - if you use a tool, put it back where you found it. It's amazing how difficult that is for some people. I think I have 5 pairs of pliers because I had to go to the hardware store and replace ones that got stuck in a drawer.

Glad you brought this up. Fishing season is in full swing. Need to organize and get everything together. Makes life easy and gives me confidence in the lake/river.

Yep. It ain't done until the knives are clean and put up, sawdust bagged, tools back in place, ice chest clean, car seats back into the back seat (so close to being done with this one), etc. Done always takes another hour.

As for organizing, I love doing it. And I'll do it again because it's never quite right and the stuff I use more rotates over time.

The book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" delves into this. In one part, he compares how some mechanics seem more organized and adhere to a "system" but don't do good work, while some mechanics seem to have tools disorganized, but they can tell you exactly where any tool is and are great at fixing things.

An organized shop is always worth it...so much easier to find items when they're needed next. Saves time and money. I'm ok with others returning items to the work bench and I'll put them away.

Having said this, I have 3 caulk guns and at least 3 cans of WD-40, as well as other duplicates in various places...and tons of batteries and boxes/containers of excess nails and screws .
