Sister don’t need no stinking handicap tag to park in that spot.

I remember during the run up to the passing of the ADA all the "specially abled" advocates proclaimed they were just like every other American. If that's the case, get rid of the handicapped spaces all together. It's just another manifestation of a special interest group wanting privileges and not equal treatment.

Damn straight. Close parking spots should benefit the customer, not the employees.

If the general public knew how much fraud there is in Workers Comp, VA Disability and Social Security Disability, there'd be protests in the streets.

Parking should be based on weight. The heavier you are, the farther away you park.

So you have a prejudice against linemen?

I agree with you for the most part but you can’t always tell how much a person is struggling just by looking at them.

The number of handicapped people in the US is roughly 13%. The number of premium parking spots in every parking lot that are designated handicapped parking is roughly 40%.

It's bullshite

I would bet about 70% of the "disabled" people using these spots could briskly walk with a 55" TV during a riot.

I fuss my father in law all the time. He brings mother in law to the grocery store and parks in a handicap spot (wheelchair access one) while my MIL shops. He said he parks that close so he can see the women walk in.

Don't you love seeing a Corvette parked in the handicap spot. Can't be too handicapped to walk a few extra feet if you can get in and out of those.

I have a family member who is an above the knee amputee and walks pretty darn well with her artificial limb. Not sure you'd notice at a cursory glance. Does she deserve one or not?

My favorite is people with handicap tags that are swerving in and out of traffic doing 90mph like they are Dale Earnhardt

You can’t walk an extra 20 feet to the store but you have the reaction time and skills to operate a vehicle at 20 mph over the speed limit?

Should immediately lose their tag if they get caught going that fast

It is time to have a brutally honest conversation about people abusing the handicapped parking benifit.
It's actually a list of related issues that need to be addressed. I think there needs to be an increase in legally required handicap parking spots. (For starters a minimum of 2 should be required vs the 1 now.) The second comes from better screening by doctors. It should not be easier to get a permit than a prescription for pain pills. Third, enforcement. Those "$200 fine" signs are the equivalent of a "camera in use" sign inside a NYC Walgreens.

As others have said, what you see in 10 seconds of time is just a 10 second view into the person's life. 3 back surgeries (and north of 10 total surgeries) over the years makes those extra steps much easier as the day goes on. I'm relatively young and about 5 years ago I started getting fed up with the stares. Stare at me and you'll get the finger.

Doctors hand them out, but I believe the biggest issue is the placards. The elderly mom gets a handicap placard and it goes from vehicle to vehicle with all of her family regardless of whether the handicap mom is present.
