Is it really that much cheaper to change your own oil vs going to a shop?

Or is it more of a peace of mind thing by doing it yourself vs. trusting a mechanic who gets paid $10/hr?
ETA: On a related note, I had a very slow crank this morning on a battery that was just replaced in January 2015. Fml.

No. Not when you can routinely get $20 oil changes and don't have to get sweaty and dirty.

It varies. Sometimes you get a good oil and filter special, other times you can get a good oil change special. If you know how to change your oil, you can pick and choose

It's also quicker to change your own, IMO.
Invariably if I go to the Jiffy Lube, it's one minute after 8 grandma's have just pulled up in their Buicks and I have to wait 30 minutes before they can even start.

I've never spent more than 30 minutes getting and oil change and the fast place usually has me out in less than 15 minutes

I have five personal vehicles. I haven't done my own oil changes in fifteen years.
Zero issues.
I know of no one in my personal or professional circles who has mentioned having a problem from an oil change location.
Do Quick Lube places screw up and cross thread oil pan plugs or filters? Yep, I'm sure but I have no first-hand knowledge of it happening.
One of my siblings had a M-B dealership neglect to put oil in the engine and burnt the engine at the dealership. $11k

I just enjoy changing my own oil.. I can look over some of the other parts of my car to see if they need any maintenance. I think with a premium filter and synthetic oil I am looking at around $30 for an oil change if I do it myself.

It's definitely cheaper if you have a diesel truck that takes 15 quarts of oil or if you use synthetic oil.

It's not much cheaper at all. I guess the savings is with time. I go to a mom and pop crack head tire shop oil change place. He charges me $35 and it takes 10 minutes. It's worth it to me. I normally drop my daughter off at school and get there right when he opens at 8. Out of there for 8:10.

I pay $56 at NBT-Tire Kingdom and they rotate my tires and top off other fluids. Worth it IMO.

Mobil 1 full synthetic is $28 at walmart for the gallon. And i can get manufacturer specific filters at walmart as well for under $5.
They carry Mopar,Motorcraft and AC Delco filters.
Where can i get a full synthetic Mobil 1 oil change with manufacturer specific filter for anywhere around $30?
And Fumoto drain valve FTW
No tool oil change

But it's not about the money for me, I hate doing it, but those halfwits used the wrong filter the one time I trusted them and I doubt they are putting in the premium synthetic they are charging for

Not really cheaper, may break even...
I just enjoy doing it, little angler likes to play with my tools, so I try to do stuff like that with him. I do almost all maintenance on my truck, wife's suv goes to the shop.
