Is getting a medal/plaque for finishing a marathon the same as a participation trophy?

Throwing this out to the wise ones of the OT. Trying to see what the parameters are?
To go a little further, what are some of the awards/recognition you get just for being part of something that you would consider to NOT be a participation trophy?
Letterman Jacket?
Military unit badge for a unit?
Perfect attendance award in school?
Gold watch or other award for being at a company X years?

For finishing a marathon, or just participating (like if someone dropped out or something during? Isn't a marathon like 26 miles or so? Even if you didn't win, finishing that still seems like a bit of an accomplishment, so not sure it is the same.

Kind of like the Ironman completion or ultra marathon gear. Pfff I do these once a week...

No. If you only get one for finishing, it's not a participation trophy. Even if everyone finishes, if the stipulation for receiving one is that you must finish, then no. If you get one just for showing up...participation trophy.
It's definitely not the same as every little league team getting a trophy just for playing.
Disclaimer: I have never run a marathon.

The medal is not a participation trophy, but the 26.3 sticker you put on the back of your car is.

Disagree. Running a mile and getting a medal is a participation trophy. Running 26.2 Miles is a hell of an accomplishment, they deserve a medal. Plus they deserve a medal for being healthy people who won’t cost us thousands or millions of dollars in healthcare later in life

Finishing a marathon is an accomplishment in my book. Like climbing a difficult mountain.

The medals clearly state "finisher". And yes, they do hand them out to everyone as they are crossing the finish line.
But, unlike a team sport, most people enter marathons, etc. for their own personal reasons and goals. When you have 4000 people enter a half marathon, it's unlikely for you to win, not even your own age group. Therefore, the typical goals for runners are finishing the race and getting their own PR.
More than likely to finish a marathon, or even a half marathon, requires months of dedicated training and getting a medal for finishing is just a token of an accomplishment people get.
And they are satisfied.
I know runners who save their medals, even some frame them (especially for Boston Marathon), and many like myself just toss them in a junk drawer once you get back home from the race.

I have three marathon medals and I got every one of them after crossing the finish line. You do get swag (stickers, lapel pins, etc.) when you pick up your registration packet but you have to finish to get the medal.

attendance awards and being with a company for years are participation awards.
Anything in the Military NO. Also Marathon and letterman jacket are not as well
