I don't know about that other stuff, but race medals are just a sort of funny memento of the day. No one I know considers them an award or takes them seriously in any way. I use my medals as a door alarm.

As someone who has read about dozens of marathons, driven near them, been inconvenienced BY them...I think it doesn't matter what they give out...People know how they did.

Anyone that can run a marathon at your age deserves a medal.

I think finishing a marathon is pretty hard. Not quite the same as a participation award in youth sports.

Looks like there's a lot of marathon girls downvoting in this thread! Not all of us try to be good at running, some of us stand and fight like a man!

I am torn on this. I am normally against participation trophies. But for the average person who isn't a competitive athlete to complete a marathon is a real accomplishment IMO.

I have a buddy that does triathlons and the first thing he does after crossing the finish line is head for the free beer tent.

I would say getting a varsity letter is not a participation trophy. You do have to earn a varsity letter by making varsity.

It is a participation trophy if you choose to look at it that way.
I have bunches of medals from all kinds of races and triathlons.
I used to think they were silly participation things.
Now I look at them as collectibles. Not a source of pride. Just fun memories.

No, it’s not.

Conpleting the marathon is the accomplishment. With the exception of a small handful of people, no one is going out there to actually be the first person to cross the line.

It’s all about personal goals and times, so “winning” could be crossing that line, or doing it in a faster time than your last one.

So 99% of the field is not out there to compete with anyone but themselves.

Also, only people who finish the marathon get a medal. If you participate and don’t finish, you don’t get a medal. So in a literal sense, it’s not a participation trophy.

Participation awards you get it for just showing up and standing around with the team. If you complete a marathon you have actually accomplished something.
