re: Is getting a medal/plaque for finishing a marathon the same as a participation trophy?

I really don't know if you get them just for participating, good question.

You don’t. You have to cross the finish to receive a medal.

Completing the football game is accomplishing something. It doesn’t mean you won, just like finishing a marathon doesn’t mean you won.

And in a football game, you’re competing against another team for a higher score. In a marathon, 99% of the people are there to beat their own high score.
You can lose a marathon, by not completing it. And if you don’t finish, you don’t get a medal.
It’s an entirely different mentality than almost any other competition or event. Go run 26.2 miles and tell me you don’t feel accomplished despite not beating the Kenyans.

I would say getting a varsity letter is not a participation trophy. You do have to earn a varsity letter by making varsity.
In the grand scheme of things you don't have to do a lot to earn a letter.

I hear you, my dude. As far as personal accomplishments, it’s exactly like a weightlifter in that sometimes you compete against yourself and not the “competition.”
And I understand completion is an accomplishment. So, I mean, it is a completion or—dare I say?—participation trophy. But I’ll respect that it’s different than every toddler getting one after T ball season even if the team sucked. That’s fair.

But, unlike a team sport, most people enter marathons, etc. for their own personal reasons and goals. When you have 4000 people enter a half marathon, it's unlikely for you to win, not even your own age group. Therefore, the typical goals for runners are finishing the race and getting their own PR.
Yep. People don't realize how much work and dedication goes into running a marathon.

Yeah, it's 100% a participation trophy.
The difference is it's one of the more respectable participation trophies you can earn.

I have NOLA 70.3 finisher gear for this year even though the race was cancelled at the start line due to severe weather
. Paid too much damned money not to take it and it wasn't my fault they cancelled. still never wore any shirts or anything until I finished a 70.3 the next week in Austin.
They do have separate actual awards for winners at marathons and such. a finisher medal is just that, a piece to show you finished.

At this point a marathon isn’t that much an accomplishment anymore. Finisher medals are participation trophies, Placing medals are accomplishments. The worst are the Run Disney ones where all these big people have 5k/Half medals and act like they won the Olympics.
It’s sad that people think it’s like climbing Everest. Average people can easily do it if they stick to a training schedule and don’t be lazy asses.

They don’t need one. They are too busy telling everybody about it already.

True. Average person doing them isn't some super genetic freak. they are just regular folks with determination and drive to spend a few months building up running mileage.
