My grandpa was in the order and had the masons show respect at his funeral. They looked like a bunch of old guys that like to drink together.

If you define scam as a “determined plan to scheme and defraud by creating a similar, but false, function to a true function”, then yes it’s a scam on Christianity.

If Templar’s walk into a KC bingo hall, you better leave. It will get ugly.

Seriously, what do you all do besides have meetings? Is it to help the needy? Raise awareness of diseases? Fantasy football?

Depends on how active the lodge is. Some older lodges, sadly, don’t do all that much anymore. Some lodges are very active: helping to fund a dyslexia clinics, supporting local youth groups, doing our best to give aid to the widows of our past members, hosting social events like barbecues and the like, etc. On the state level they’ll fund larger projects like scholarships, medical aid, children’s homes and children’s charities.

The Baton Rouge Shriners distributed hundreds of thousands of dollars of materials and labor to assist those affected by the 2016 flood. And many local lodges did what they could, where they could.

With rare exception, Masonic functions in Louisiana aren’t allowed to have alcohol.

What is the Scottish Rite?
Without getting into all of the subtle nuances, groups like the York Rite and Scottish Rite are appendant bodies (you have to be a Mason to join) that practice more a more advanced series of rituals and participate in their own charity programs.
