Yep
In terms of privacy invasion, they aren't in the same stratosphere. If people are really worried about their DNA being mapped to them via their relatives that submit to 23 And Me and the government getting that information, they should probably shut off their phones immediately.

Yeah, it does.
It literally listens to you all day. It knows your bank account balances, what time you wake up and go to bed, where you shop, who you visit with, what you email about, details about your health, etc.
They then take all this data and have algorithms that develop profiles into your political leanings, social views, tendencies, etc.
Unless you have a flip phone burner, in which case, never mind you're good.

What's more private then your own DNA? Like I said they probably dont do anything nefarious with it.
But being able to know a population's DNA based on the 5% that submitted to the test is the ultimate invasion of privacy. Its not right to know my medical history because a relative did the test.
That's not even considering the fine print that 23 and me can sell your profile for research purposes. Also hacking the data of companies like 23 and me is a consideration as well. We are at the infancy of DNA testing and profiling, there is no telling where this pandora box all leads, but I know I'm not comfortable with anybody having the most private part of me in a database because my dumbass cousin wanted to do the test.

They can "guess" what your DNA "might" look like from your cousin, but that is about it.

It sounds private, but its really not. They can't do nefarious things with it and DNA doesn't reveal things like your sins (herpes and alcoholism). Plus, I could follow you for a couple hours and probably get your DNA from trash, spit, sweat, etc. if I (or government) actually wanted to.

I'm trying to use an example of how new technology would have been handled in the past with similar conspiracy worry.

The lack of people freaking out about their phones is what jumps out.
The other day I was at the pediatrician's office, with my phone locked and in my pocket, and I said "cool painting" about a print on the wall. I didn't describe it or take a picture.
An hour later I had an instragram ad for that exact painting print. The painting was geotagged and my phone heard me mention it, an algorithm connected those location dots and my words and tried to sell it to me.
shite is crazy.

Forget where but police just solved a 30 year old murder like this using a napkin after following a guy to a public auction.
If they want it they will get it. If you don't commit any crimes there isn't really a concern with Gov having your DNA and I am a small Gov guy. I just think it's an irrational fear.
