Yeah, I'm 1/32nd Catholic - my Great Great Grandfather was a priest. It seems to have been much more common back then.

Fine tuning health insurance to adapt to macro health trends is a good thing.
They aren't going to say "We bought your individual DNA profile from 23 And Me and you have a slightly higher risk for cardiovascular disease so your premium is going up". That just won't happen without consent.
Now, one day I could definitely see these insurance companies pulling your DNA profile themselves to develop a risk profile. But again, that'd be with consent and not behind your back from a genealogy website.

I think there is legitimate concern about why they are gathering the info and what they are doing with it.
I saw a report the other day that if your cousin or other relatives submit a sample, they have a close enough match to know your DNA also.
The report said if 5% of the population submits DNA then they have enough samples to determine the DNA of every person in our population. That seems unreasonable and unnecessary to allow the government access to all that info.
There was a killer in Pa recently that was arrested because his cousin submitted to one of the DNA sites. They knew the killer was in that family and worked it from there and found him.
I'm not for hiding killers but it does show that a popular DNA testing company shared its data with the government.

Look how many people are worried about the government though. What's the real fear of the government having it? I'm fine with people not doing it - I've never done it - but I don't grasp the fear of the government in this case.

They didn't share the data. The police get the killers DNA and submit it to the companies as if they were a customer, then it maps them to relatives.
What do you think the government is going to do with your DNA profile even if they did have access to all of it?

In what scenario would they unlawfully search and seizure due to your DNA?
I hate government overreach, but I just don't see what they could do with my DNA that negatively impacts me.
They now know I've got French and Yugosalvian heritage, have family history of heart disease, and have 60+ cousins! Oh shite!

posted this before but dead serious, I was as big of a man ho as there was, in my hay day you couldn't get anything that a good dosing of tetracycline wouldn't take care of(never got anything,) so no glove, I've often wondered if I have kids out there somewhere, or if I may have contributed to abortions, I was all over the place
