That's the definition of irresponsible gun ownership, and it makes that gun more of a risk to you than to anyone else (someone else can find it without you knowing they now have a gun).
If you're not around kids it's one thing, but there are people with kids (or grandkids) who don't keep track of their guns and that's exactly how kids end up shooting people.

I always assumed most people who keep a gun in their vehicle left it in there all the time.. You don't want to bring it in every day and forget to bring it back... then when you really need it... Its not there.

It is your responsibility as a gun owner to keep it out of the hands of someone who can not legally buy one on their own!!!! If they can get it by easily breaking in to you unattended vehicle than you are an irresponsible gun owner. End of story. Yes they are in the wrong but breaking into you car but it shouldn't be that easy for them.

I wasn't actually trying to be critical of you, specifically.
The point is that everybody here probably thinks of themselves as responsible gun owners, and most of them probably are. But they might not be as responsible as they think, because people make mistakes...right?
And keep the political BS out of it. Believe it or not, it's possible to have a discussion about guns and responsibility without it being political.

My point is that unless you keep your gun in a safe or on your person at all times, people can say you're "irresponsible" so it's completely disingenuous to call someone irresponsible for forgetting their gun in their locked vehicle every now and then. There's a huge difference between making an understandable mistake and bring negligent.

And what happens when you have your gun but go somewhere they are not allowed(courthouse, federal bldg, bar, church, most hospitals, or anywhere where the property owner forbids it). Do you lock it in your truck while you go in?

Fair enough. It was more the idea that someone might completely forget where their gun is (not just leaving it in a locked car).

True. The thing that bothers me is that so many people are capable of forgetting what's at stake from their actions, and not just with guns.
Driving is a great example. Everybody somehow thinks they can handle texting while driving. Meanwhile, they put everyone around them at risk.

Not a problem if vehicle is locked.
I keep guns locked in my vehicle all the time.
