We're getting a puppy in the next month and looking at getting a fence for our backyard. I had a fence company come out and quote and it's $6k for a flat-top aluminum fence (required by HOA). Looking at 170' linear feet as my neighbors on both sides have a fence we'd be connecting to. This is also with 3 gates (2-5' and 1-4').

Looking to see if an invisible fence would be any cost savings and reached out to Invisible Fence which is coming out today. See that there are some other brands, Halo Smart Fence being one of them and wanted to see if anyone has any experience with these brands.

Man I went to a friend of mine's a while back. He has a German Shepard mix. He had a shock collar on him, but he said it is deactivated.

For some reason it amazed me how the dog would get to a certain point and just stop and not even attempt to go any further. We were outside talking and the dog was excited that people were over and I called him over and my friend told me he wasn't going to cross any further because his collar used to be activated, but once he was trained to not go past certain areas it was deactivated.

Im not sure if this info helps or if you agree with using a shock collar, but I can just tell you this particular dog didn't even think about going past a certain point.

They’re pretty good at keeping your dog in.

They do nothing to stop other dogs coming onto your property and that often creates problems.

I have a PetSafe underground fence. It works well.

Invisible fences may work to keep your dog in but they do nothing to keep other animals out, plus it basically traps your dog in your yard if attacked. Considering the pit bull stories posted just this week, I'd rethink this option.

Pets cost money. Put in an real fence.

I have Pet Safe wireless unit and it is adjustable for a radius from the unit. I had set in my front foyer and it covered my front yard, sides, and most of the back. I don’t have a fence and do have a slope. It worked great and I only had to replace batteries now and then in the collar unit. The collar also has two sizes of metal cones, one for thin coats and one for thick coats. Sensitivity levels handled the “shock” quite well. The collar unit also warns the pet as it approaches the zone of defense.
It took a few days for my Lab to understand his boundaries through a process of familiarity with the collar unit and the flag marked boundaries.

I also have the Petsafe Wireless,I have an 8 month old Redbone puppy and she absolutely won’t cross the line.I can take the collar off,put her on a leash and when I get to the boundary she plants her feet.Only way she’ll leave the yard is if I take the collar off and ride her out on the golf cart. She loves to ride.
Now I once had a female Lab mix and it didn’t work for her.She would take off running, hunch up at the tone and take the shock. When she wanted back in she would sit there and wait for me to come take the shock collar off so she could come back in the yard.
Talking to other people and with my experience,I would say it depends on the dog.

If you have high frequency hearing loss these things are dangerous (to you!). The device that attached to the collar emits a high freq. tone or beep as a warning but it's around 1.5-2khz.

But that thing puts out series of pretty good zaps with enough voltage to light up a neon bulb.

I've never heard the warning tone/beep, but I was zapped a bunch of times testing trying to figure out why the 'warning' wasn't working..... it worked just fine, the operator was not only stupid he lost most hearing over 1200hz.

My dog figured out how to get across it. He would start running and when he got close, he’d start shaking his neck so it would skim across the top of his fur as he went across.

He was an insanely smart catahoula though. Once I caught him I’d bring him back across with his collar on.

I went with Dog Guard. (www.dogguard.com) It was a little cheaper than Invisible Fence - but the main reason was I wasn't comfortable with my local Invisible Fence dealer. Just gave me bad vibes.

Ive been happy. It does what it says it does. Once they get trained (took ours about 6 weeks), they dont even need the collar anymore. They wont go anywhere close to that area!!!

I have this system as well. My dog is black mouth cur weighing ~65 lbs. He refuses to leave the yard with the collar on. Including when the mail people are delivering. What others have said about this system is accurate.

Specially this:

I wouldn't get the one you have to put in the ground. Had a friend with 2 labs and had it. The female would get close to where it would beep like a warning for being close and take a nap killing the battery. The male would just go full speed at it, get shocked and do a flip. Once he was past it it would only keep him out. It could work out for you but he was pissed he put down at least 400' of that wire for them to figure out how to beat it.

I have the PetSafe stubborn dog collar system with the thicker, 14ga wire running around my property. Both of my dogs, one a blue heeler the other a border collie/lab mix stop about 5 feet from it's edge every time they get near it.

They know where the barrier is out and are wary of it. When I lost power during the winter storm they still wouldn't go near the boundary and that is with just their regular collars on at the time.

It's a good system for keeping your dogs in your yard. Not 100 percent foolproof but for most dogs it keeps them home.

seems smart, and content. Must be an older dog.

I actually have a real fence, with the invisible fence. 20 month old Husky, extremely smart. He never gets shocked, but i imagine he gets the vibration warning daily, and smartly backs ups when he does, but he damn well knows where he should be getting the vibration alert, and if he's not getting it, he's going to get closer and closer to keep testing it, and if it's not working, then he's breaking the fence and getting out.
