Invisible fences work until the dog realizes if it runs fast enough the shock only lasts a second.

After that it's worthless

Now I once had a female Lab mix and it didn’t work for her.She would take off running, hunch up at the tone and take the shock. When she wanted back in she would sit there and wait for me to come take the shock collar off so she could come back in the yard.
Talking to other people and with my experience,I would say it depends on the dog.

I am asking out of curiosity, did you start doing it when the lab mix was a puppy? im just wondering if that would make a difference.

She was somewhere around 8-10 months old.
My current puppy,Redbone I started at 4 months old.
I might have waited too long for the first one,she had a taste of freedom and didn’t want to give it up.

If you are going the DIY route then go then I would suggest going with the Sport Dog brand system especially for larger dogs. Much better built unit that will last a while. I went through a couple of petsafe models before i switched and there is a clear quality difference. Sport Dog also allowed me to fence off a much larger section of my property since it has a more powerful signal.

Fun fact: Some of the petsafe collars are compatible with sport dog system if you need to mix and match. The sport dog collars have a 9v battery so they are essentially the "stubborn dog" collar from pet safe. 9v Batteries last a long time and are cheaper than the pet safe proprietary batteries. I also have a pet safe collar for one of my smaller dogs on the same system.

ETA:
Rent a cable installer from a rental place or Home Depot if doing this yourself. I did 10 acres in half of a day. makes easy work of it.

Had two pet safe units that worked great. Don’t live in subdivision though. Mainly didn’t want him wandering off. He did break through occasionally. I think was 600$ for two units. I did two to cover bigger area. Set up was 15 minutes

Occasionally a passing truck pulling a trailer was too much for my Lab to resist and would fly through the shock area, yelp, and chase said target. He would also sit outside the charged area and wait for me to remove his collar, enter, and let me put it back on. Smart pooches!

We had Dog Guard for our last dog. Once you train them on it, they work great. Only time he got out was once when the battery in the collar was dead and he figured out he could get out. It gives a warning beep about a foot away from where it would shock them. He would freeze and slowly back up when he heard that beep. Took about a month to train him on it. This was for a boxer. Some stubborn breeds are harder to train on it according the install guy. Labs he said were the worst.

I have the wireless one. We had to buy two transmitter units. I have a big yard. It keeps my 150 lb mastiff in the yard. Works great. We had the underground fence for years. Got tired of looking forward breaks underground. The wireless is the way to go.

I had one and it worked for a while. One day, the dog decided it was worth the shock to get out so he did.

Funny thing is that he would always cross the boundary at the same place every time, even if it was far from where he was going.

Same here. If she saw ducks or rabbits, she would just take the shock and go after them, so we gave up and installed a fence. Loved that crazy-arse dog. Lost her to cancer at age 3. Still makes me cry.

Have had Petsafe invisible fences for around 10 years at 2 different homesites. Mixed results.....worked great on a jack russell and a lab mix mongrel. Failed miserably on a hound mix and two other mongrels. The hound mix would cross the fence unperturbed with her neck area visibly palpitating from the collar set on its highest setting. Mongrel 2 would just run through the damn line with a Yelp. Irritating as hell considering the $ outlay.

I had them come by today. Do you have the traditional one or Boundary Plus, which is the newer one?

The lady said that she rarely hears of dogs getting out of the property with the new Boundary Plus. One of the cool things about it is it comes with a disc that I can put anywhere around my house and sends a 3' directional "beep" around it to keep the dog out. So, if I want them to stay away from my kids playroom, i put the disc in front of the door and it's like an invisible fence for that room.
