As Ive stated before my med school had a quota. 10% of class had to be black.

These were spots reserved for blacks. The administration knew only 50% would finish med school so they accounted for this and technically no spots were taken from more qualified candidates.

The average MCAT score for black is in the low 20s. Whites, asians around 30.

I find it depressing that they give false hope to people that simply arent capable of completing med school by giving them a spot but it is what it is.

I still keep up with a couple of my black classmates that finished and they are doing very well, most doing primary care near their homes.

But the ones that flunked out essentially wasted a couple years of their life and now have tons of debt.

The article essentially states that the lack of AA medical students starts with problems as early as the father being nothing more than a sperm donor.

It is completely ignorant to try to solve any education issues in one generation, stupid.
So very true

quote:

The question is not how do we get these kids from the ghetto's and lowest income into Med school.
They all can't go to med school, capitalism doesn't work like that. The few that can crawl from the bottom will make it. If greater emphasis of education is placed in the home, more will make it.

quote:

The question is, how do we get these kids with parents that are in and out of jobs, on food stamps, and welfare into a 40 hour a week skilled labor job? Then when we can stop the 3rd generation from living in a trailer park or ghetto, you can start talking about maybe college. Then the next generation can talk about being a Doctor.
One thing we need to do is stop the war on drugs. We need to invest more in skill building very early on. Not every person can be a Rhode Scholar, but everyone can be productive and find what they are truly good at.

quote:

The problem you have is parents that first off don't care about working and secondly don't have the skills to hold a 40 hour a week skilled labor job such as being a mechanic, a plumber, an electrician, etc. We are too focused on putting low income into Grad school and not focused at all to put low income into graduating from Vocational school to make 40k a year.

As long as there are plenty of black patients that should equal things out

That is true of many schools. These individuals still have to sit for the "Step" tests which throws them in the deep end of the pool with everyone. They will lag well behind there too...often times having to repeat the Step 1 and/or wash out thereafter.

Sadly, minority students can get into residency programs that are in demand (such as the 'ROAD' specialties) with lesser Step scores now too. The reason is that many departments are pushing diversity for the sake of diversity.

It is a bizarre world we live in right now.

Note that there is no MCAT score on that graph that has an acceptance rate lower than almost 70% for African American applicants.

If I were an AA parent I would sign my kid up for every biology class right now. That is a hell of a good opportunity.

Exactly. Black students with a GPA ranging between 3.20 to 3.39 and a MCAT of 24-26 are accepted to med school 67.3% of the time. But Asian students in that same range are accepted only 7.7% of the time, whites students only 12.3% of the time, and Hispanic students 36% of the time.

And the only group of white students who get into med school at a higher rate than the lowest level of black students are white students from the highest level who have a GPA of 3.60 - 3.79 and a MCAT of 30-32. And even here in this group only 74.1% of white students get into med school while 93% of black students from that same group get in.

How the hell can anyone justify those numbers?

IQ is the argument of white supremacists?

Perhaps those MCAT/GPA stats are appalling because there are almost no black kids hitting 75% +? That would indicate IQ more so than "hard work" or culture.

The war of drugs certainly needs to be looked at critically. The problem with substance addiction though is that it affects children of drug addicted parents. Legalizing crack ain't gonna change that fact.

That said, we desperately need to place greater emphasis and value on skilled labor jobs and vocational training (plumbers, HVACs and Carpentry). In conjunction, we need to teach people how to start and maintain a business around their trade and we need to ease the governmental burdens associated with starting and running a business.

Funny that I was talking to two new doctors fresh out of Med school not an hour before reading this. They were recounting how they basically spent three years locked in their apartments studying or going to class a minimum of 12 hours a day.

I didn't think about their color, their upbringing or how much money their family has. All I thought was - "Good for them but frick that, I am not personally willing to sacrifice or work that hard for that career." In my mind it was solely an issue of hard work.

but this situation seems to be going backwards rather than forward. It seems that the more society tries to help the worse it gets.

no but depriving economic opportunity to millions every year isn't helping those people advance in society

We can say blacks are better genetically as a whole when it comes to athletics. But to say they aren't as gifted genetically when it comes to intelligence is a no no.

Either Watson or Crick (founders of the human genome) found this out the hard way. It explains why he waited until his death to announce it publicly.

I feel like this article belongs in here. It's an excellent article. I always respected Dr. Francis but never really knew a whole lot about him. He's an impressive man.

How does tiny Xavier University in New Orleans manage to send more
African-American students to medical school than any other college in the country?

This is true for general success.

Medical school, atleast at LSU, supports that. At graduation, family members with MDs can give their family member the diploma. While it may not be half, there is a large amount of grads whose relative is an MD. The why is simple, they know what it takes to achieve the end result. For most, it's years of busting their arse and sacrificing their time.

You've really got to get the good teachers in there early to realize who the smart kids are and who the not-so-smart kids are. Then, separate them.

Kids that have the ability to take AP classes should not be in the same classes as special ed kids. In bad areas, they shouldn't even be in the same schools. You're just dumbing down everyone to get to that lower level

Let's start with firing the bad teachers

I went from private to public twice. Second time was MHS, so that wasn't that big of a change. First time was Kehoe to Harahan Elementary and then Riverdale. 100% honesty, the teachers at Harahan told me I didn't need to do any schoolwork because I was light years ahead of my classmates. They were doing first grade stuff in 5th grade. The disparity was/is ridiculous
