Instagram has begun to hide the number of users who have “liked” a photo for some accounts in the US in an ongoing effort to create a less stressful experience.

quote:

The backlash to the change in the US was swift, with the CEO’s announcement drawing a slew of negative comments on Twitter. Instagram has repeatedly stated it is making the change to allow users to focus on content rather than feedback. It comes as social media is increasingly criticized for adverse mental health effects and Facebook, Instagram’s parent company, has become the target of antitrust investigations.

“The idea is to try to depressurize Instagram, make it less of a competition, and give people more space to focus on connecting with the people they love and things that inspire them,” Mosseri said.

I think they’re smart enough to know that they would lose a ton of business by making this more than just a test.

This is a good change. A lot of Instagram users group up and mass like every thing people inside their group post, manipulating the system and highlighting posts that aren't really interesting to most users. Viewers see the massive amount of likes and follow suit, creating a peer pressure type system...sort of like a laugh track in a sitcom.

The user can still see how many likes their photos get, it's the viewers who can't see the likes which will give the post more of an honest number regarding popularity of the picture/video.

It was only a few years ago that people had no way of knowing how many likes their stupid fricking social media posts got, and most normal people didn't give a frick.

21 upvotes so far. Not bad but the first reply always gets the best shot.

This would cause a meltdown for all the instagram models whose lives revolve around that. I'm all in though.
