Though I am a fan of this proposed change, an entire industry has developed around these statistics (insta whoring). Its not just a change that will impact how people socialize, but how people make a living.
It's interesting to study the impact is nothing else.

So they gave a drug (the chemical brain release people get from validation. “Likes”), and they are just gonna take it away like that?
You’ll have these instaThots booting up MySpace and looking for bootleg Chinese likes.

Maybe it will make them actually learn a valuable skill or trade and contribute to society

Are you saying the world's oldest profession isn't a valuable skill or contribution to society? Or do you think those bitches are paying for their yacht and spa weekends through fashion sponsorships?

You can still who liked it. Just not a tally. Each user is still listed if you click on the link.

Great new business opportunity. Create a program that will tally up how many people liked it and give those instaThots the fix they crave

on other people's pictures it will say "[i] name/i] and others liked this)

If you click on others on someone else's post it shows who liked it. Just not a tally.
It only shows the # for your own posts.

Back when you had to use words to tell Chris how much he sucked instead of just downvoting him into oblivion

Then get rid of likes altogether

Instagram has begun to hide the number of users who have “liked” a photo for some accounts in the US in an ongoing effort to create a less stressful experience.

The backlash to the change in the US was swift, with the CEO’s announcement drawing a slew of negative comments on Twitter. Instagram has repeatedly stated it is making the change to allow users to focus on content rather than feedback. It comes as social media is increasingly criticized for adverse mental health effects and Facebook, Instagram’s parent company, has become the target of antitrust investigations.
“The idea is to try to depressurize Instagram, make it less of a competition, and give people more space to focus on connecting with the people they love and things that inspire them,” Mosseri said.
I think it is at least a sign that some people are waking up the problems of how social media and constantly being plugged in can change how our brains operate.
For young people, leisure time almost doesn't exist as even that is spent in some sort of online competition over social media.
