Is the crime in question worth risking the life of my family?
No doubt the criminal is at fault but I don't expect more from them but I do expect more from public servants.
When is getting your man worth the risk this poses?
This stuff usually only changes when a city/town gets tired of paying money to victims. There will be lawsuits. Those settlements are what ultimately broke California and CHP from their "Wild, wild West" days of vehicles pursuits. They're a whole lot smarter with it these days, and have become the best in the world. Of, course they get plenty of practice, even though running is a mandatory year in jail.

quote:Stolen vehicles and/or stolen plates make this an ineffective answer.
Get close enough to get the license plate and pick them up later.
quote:When someone runs, it presents a problem for people who enforce the law. How does the officer know why that person is running? Is the reason for stealing the car simply a theft or was it to facilitate a more serious crime?
I get that sometimes it is a violent felon that needs to be stopped, but apart from that, these high-speed pursuits do not make sense.
But in our soft modern society, I guess we should just submit in all situations and hope that criminals will not harm us.
Maybe we can just pass a law that murderers, rapists and robbers cannot use stolen cars or flee from police...

We need to start with public hanging of judges.

Was it the normal suspects?

If your initial premise is bullshite, the whole story is bullshite.

We lost a family in Metairie a few years ago over some shoplifed blue jeans.
More recently, a cop chased sone outlet mall shoplifters and they crashed into a car killing a person.
Yeah, I hate shoplifters, but I hate killing innocent people more. Plus, pretty simple to id thrm with security footage.

Drone tech should be to a point where every patrol car can have a deployable drone that can follow a fleeing suspect car until either another unit can intercept or another drone can pick up the tracking.

Wrecks at > 100 MPH do hurt us as well, don't you think?
Is it soft to want my family to get home alive even at the cost of letting a speeder or petty criminal get away?
You are right we dont know what they are being chased for, but they do and if it is not something very serious I think they should not allow high speed chases.

I guess they could have maybe waited until the drunk a-hole ran into the car and killed people.

You're right, it's much better to run a high speed chase through a fricking downtown.
How about just.......catch the fricking plate numbers and do what you can with that.

Thinking felons don’t steal vehicles and use fake plates or none at all

How about avoiding high-speed chases when not essential? Get close enough to get the license plate and pick them up later. This prevents putting innocents in harm's way for a speeding ticket or similar offense. Yeah man, let’s place blame on the POLICE for this.
fricking idiot.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but as much as police irritate me, I also feel like we are bending over backwards for criminals. Don't chase them here, don't stop them there. It's eroding the public's faith in society, which does have value.

The solution is to kill the perp either before or after the stop. Do that a couple of times and this stops overnight.
That used to be the way it was done, but cops can no longer use roadblocks.

These cops live for this crap because they get to play special forces chasing these guys. They put the lives of way too many innocent people at risk to make these chases worth it. I know if anyone in my family was seriously injured or killed in a chase like this, I would be out for blood. They already have the plate number, so they know the home address of the idiot they’re chasing. Just go pick him up another time. Or wait a week and these idiots will do something else to get arrested. . Unless the guy is a know murderer, it doesn’t make it worth killing or hurting innocent people!

The suspect:
The report at the link says it was an attempted stop on suspicion of DUI.
I think the officer is on routine administrative leave pending the investigation.
