Cell phone pings were very unreliable for tracing location back then (as explained in serial season 1).

Also don't trust Cazes.

That was done by a black policewoman if I recall correctly.

ETA: sorry I was wrong, that was in New Orleans, the name of the restaurant escapes me at the moment.

I'm sure it has something to do with the time period. I remember being able to access news articles on it via Westlaw back in the day, but there's not a lot of 1997 content sitting for free out on the web.

Plus, a lot of the coverage would have been television, and there wasn't a direct broadcast text to web feed like WAFB and WBRZ having going on now.
