I'd be okay if by leveling the field, EVERYBODY benefited. As is, it just the state sharing the misery. The state is a parasite.

If the local retailers stop charging sales tax as well, that'd perfectly fine with me and result in that mythic level playing field.

If local retailers stop collecting they will not be in business long. So, what you are saying is fantasy land. Trust me, you do not hate taxes more than me. Equal at best. But, Amazon or any company shouldn't have an advantage over others given by the government. Government shouldn't give one company a pass and others have to follow the rules.

Is it just state sales tax they are charging (4%) or is it State and Parish? (parish can be anywhere between 4-6%)

You do realize you're supposed to account for sales tax not charged by Amazon when you're filing your taxes correct?

Lol, if the president can be "smart" with his taxes, so can I.

In Louisiana, taxes are not neccessary bc the gov't already has enough of our money

That's probably why over 40% of our state budget is funded by the Federal government.

Is this happening because they are putting a facility of some sort in LA?

We've been paying sales tax on Amazon for several years now in Tennessee. And it's still, by far, the best place to shop.

No this was part of the "solution" to the budget deficit that JBE and the state legislature came up with.

It's not new revenue. It's revenue that should have always happened, but it's become painfully obvious placing the taxation point on the consumer doesn't work.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda.
Should have, but didn't. It's money that years ago WAS there because people were buying these items from local retailers and paying taxes, but in recent years have not. If it wasn't there last year, or the year before that, or the year before that, and next year it IS there, then for all practical purposes it is new revenue.

Isn't Tennessee one of several states in the south that don't require their citizens to pay state income tax?

Texas and Florida being the other two ...

So, it's right to completely shaft the local business people
how many purchases made from amazon would have gone to a "local" shop if not for its presence?

pretty cool that as a retailer you get to keep one percent of your sales tax. I didn't know that until I became one.

(at least on parish, I e-file state and don't know there)

In recent years, Jeff Bezos of Amazon has been pretty supportive of collection of sales taxes by online retailers and supports that Marketplace Fairness Act.

This isn't him being a philanthropist. his company is the largest online retailer and he realizes eventually he will have to collect tax for all states. This is about making the smaller online retailers collect tax so people don't pursue the ideas in this thread and find a way around it. People going to newegg, etc would be lost revenue; that's what he's trying to avoid. This isn't about him wanting to have a level playing field with Brick & Mortar stores.
