As I recall, state sales tax is like 7%, but the law says municipalities can't tack on more than 2.75% additional, making the max 9.75%. The property taxes can be raised to balance the revenue, but you still come out ahead for the most part.
Louisiana has state sales tax, no local limits (meaning it is in excess of 10% some places), income taxes, property taxes, etc. Louisiana has the shittiest tax code. And the management of those dollars is embarrassing.

I pay 2.25% more in sales tax than you do in my area of Louisiana.
