Agreed. Why not have the employers that get the direct benefit from their work pay them more so the rest of the taxpayers don't have to subsidize them in this manner?

At no point in my life , and I’m old, was there the expectation that you could afford a two bedroom apartment on minimum wage. That’s a ludicrous premise. Who would build and maintain this apartment at under their cost and provide it to you ? Minimum wage means SHARED expenses. And it always has.

because the rise in cost of good sold would far out weigh it..... basically it's the taxpayers paying for their poor decisions - no matter how you slice it and politicians ipso de facto buying their votes

and in San Fran you get $184k for poop patrol.

So you prefer to subsidize them.

average two-bedroom apartment
That is the key. If you are making minimum wage, you shouldn’t be looking to stay at the AVERAGE apartment. The minimum priced apartment is your range...since that is what you make. The minimum

So either keep the current safety net we have for low income people or force employers to pay them a 'living wage.'? You're subsidizing them in both of those scenarios.

I have a better idea. Get rid of any taxpayer or employer subsidy altogether.

I prefer we stop tinkering and let things settle where they should be
But between raising the min wage and subsidizing, I highly prefer subsidizing. Tie it to continued education/training.
Again, the min wage is pretty much for people who either will not work much or can't keep a job.

The key distinction is in one scenario the taxpayer has no choice and in the other they do, I prefer to have a choice of how I spend my money.
For those that complain that this would make their CFA sandwich too expensive just take the hint from the thread and try harder in life, you will make more money and they can continue to afford the same things they enjoy now.

The minimum wage is poor economic policy.
There are first world countries without the min wage. Left wingers have been programmed to believe it's a necessity.

Am I supposed to be surprised or shocked that someone making minimum wage can't afford rent on a 2 bedroom apartment? It minimum freaking wage.

I swear they don't teach economics anymore. As a small business owner, I'd love for anyone to come and try to run it paying retail employees a "liveable" wage. The job market is insane right now and it's nearly impossible for us to find anyone for less than $12/hr.

If all employers were forced to pay a living wage, I imagine the cost of many things would go up. That includes essential items and not just the CFA sandwich you used in your example. In that case, the poor are still subsidized by taxpayers (not just business owners) and you have no more choice in how you spend your money than you do now.

So you are for a change and want more government requirements for education/training. Correct?

Just reminding you that I am talking about roughly $10 and under which accounts for ~30% of wage earners in the US. This covers a lot of people who started at or very near minimum wage and have stayed and performed well enough to get multiple raises.
Sometimes I think people forget that an IQ of ~100 is the median. That leaves a lot of people, through no fault of their own, limited to very low paying jobs. Most of them won't have a spouse that is a rocket surgeon. There is only so much they can do to try harder at life. I personally would rather they get paid more by an entity that directly benefits from it than through subsidies.

A 2 bedroom for $877 a month? Sign me up. I was paying $1800 for the same thing.
I was paying that for a 1 bedroom apartment 10 years ago and it wasn't anything special. I would hate to see what a 2 bedroom for $877 a month looks like.

That's pretty good. That means that two adults working the minimum wage earn enough to split a 2BR apartment.

The recent outrage over this is kinda funny. I'll bet most people who support this $15 national min wage don't know a single person over 25 who makes min wage.
