Yea I'm not trying to dick measure but if you're going lower than 54, yours is probably smaller than mine.
Half of the plunge is being a dog.
And honestly if it’s just cold AF you can’t feel anything after like 20 seconds

I've only done an actual plunge twice. The guy who owned it set it at 54 degrees, I wasn't going to be a weirdo and ask him to lower it.
What I have started to do is take scottish showers. Not sure on actual temp but given the outside temps where I am, I imagine the cold tap is in the upper 40s max. Feels incredible stepping out after 3 mins of that.

I've been going take a 2-3min dip in the water some mornings at Carmel beach.

Just add a few bags of ice to your bath water

Yeah, OP should start with cold showers. You can get most of the benefits through that and way more convenient. If you can stick with daily cold showers, maybe invest in the tub later. I’m on the cold shower train but it’s very very difficult, honestly not that bad once I get in the water but the mental war wages trying to convince yourself to step into the ice water. There’s something to be said about doing something that very few others would choose to do, and no one is there to see you do it. It’s like the shopping cart argument on steroids.

Wow. Thats a hell of a synopsis. Quite compelling.
Is the cold plunge craze just people jumping into a cold pool?

I take my normal hot shower and then after I'm finished cleaning up I set the taps to full cold.
Nothing quite like going from 105ish to upper 40s in about 3 seconds.

Start with a cold water shower every morning for a week and see if you are cut out for it before purchasing something. No hot water switch at the end.

I vote for the LLOTOT to do some extensive research of this issue and post results with plenty of images.
That is all.

Basically. Most of the cheap ones that people buy for home use on Amazon are about the size of a half barrel, made out of a canvas/plastic/rubber type fabric with a PVC frame. Fill it about half way with water and a bunch of ice. You get in and submerge yourself as deep as you can, for as long as you can stand it.
Its a very intense experience. Im just not a fan of the cold, never have been. I cannot do it. I much rather sit in a sauna (wet or dry).

I have a membership to a place that has both sauna and cold plunges to give a shot for a few months.
It took me 5 sessions before I was even remotely ok with the plunge. I can now stay for 15 deep breaths, get out and shake it off, and repeat again.
I really like the sauna, but can’t imagine owing a plunge at home. That much space, maintenance, etc for something you’d do at most a few minutes a day.

We've had one for a few months. The wife wanted it. At first, I wouldn't do it, it's absolutely miserable. However, now I do it nearly every day. It really does feel incredible. My wife takes it to the extreme. She does it twice a day for like 15 min at a time. We keep ours at 46 right now.

I’ve considered both the store bought and the DIY styles.
In the end I decided I’d just keep using my garden tub and 3 20lb bags of ice.
I don’t do cold plunge every day, just when I’m really sore. The ice costs me $11.

I can't get more than to my waist and I'm done.
Thats all I really do, to my waist for 7 minutes, then 5 in the hot tub then 7 more in the cold plunge. Ultimately, proper usage has to be aligned with that the desired outcome is.
The fad of the entire body except the hands for 3 minutes for mental clarity is a waste IMO.

Why not start with cold showers? See if you can commit to that first

I think the biggest unknown for someone considering is the cost of entry. We have the plunge pro - it is $7,000. Time will tell whether the use will decline, but so far wife and I have only gotten MORE into it. All of our friends use/want to use it too.
You never get used to it. It's always miserable and painful.
