re: I’m not trying to be rude. But nepotism in Louisiana is absolutely insane.

That’s a saying everywhere It's way worse here though.
If you’re a transplant in Houston or some other city and you’re not like a high level gov employee or executive, you’re not going to be very plugged in

It is, had to jump through hoops to get any type of white collar or skilled job in Louisiana. My parents were very introverted and didn't socialize a lot. You probably don't notice it because of connections you have but it's not like that for most. It's especially frustrating when you get passed up by people who are less productive than you.
Im sure you're right about high levels of government or executive type jobs but for every role I have gotten in Texas (I work in technology sales) it was always experience and numbers. I didn't know anyone at any of the companies that have hired me. If you can a job based on nepotism in Louisiana, I would suggest anyone to stay there because they would probably have trouble getting hired in a major economic hub. A lot of managers in Louisiana would have trouble qualifying for basic entry level roles in those areas.
EDIT: Why is there always some boomer or Louisiana lifer on here who try to deny/gaslight people when they mention issues like this and state their personal experience? I mean they're not lying. There's evidence to back it up. We're have one the largest brain drains and outmigration rates.

Perfect example of people bitching and no real context. Louisiana has nepotism laws for state agencies. This is a much bigger issue in private industry in Louisiana.
Yeah I’m sure that people in state agencies don’t get their kids jobs.
No idiot— they just all get jobs in other agencies. You work at workforce commission? You call your counterpart at LDH and now your kid works at LDH.
That’s how this all works.

It’s not a tree, just a stick.

Really? Any state with a coastline has better and more accessible fishing than La. Bass fishing in La sucks arse because coon asses keep everything they catch. Unless you enjoy calling a 4lber a trophy, fish elsewhere. Same with hunting. As soon as a deer has buttons on his head someone blows its brains out.
As far as hiking, biking, etc La has probably the ugliest terrain known to man.

One of biggest reasons I left the state was because I was sick and tired of hearing, "Hey, are you related to [my dad]/[my brother]/[my uncle]/[my cousin]" etc. etc. and being pre-judged based on that response. With a simple "yes" I'd either be capable of no wrong, of shitting rainbows and whatnot on command, or I'd be the worst person in the world simply because of my last name. It's hard to nail down which one it'll be until you say the magic "yes" word. It's quite honestly much easier not having to worry about it living in a different region, even if some problems are easier solved by one phone call if I were to have stayed.

Didn't you have an entire thread about a week ago about how Tigerdroppings was bad for your mental health and you were leaving?

I think the problem everyone is getting at is broader than nepotism. Rather, Louisiana is absolutely lousy with parochialism. New Orleans, with its "Where did you grow up / go to High School" dynamic exudes a particularly blatant and overt parochialism, but Shreveport, Acadiana and BR are just as bad (BR used to be a little more egalitarian and meritocratic; maybe too many New Orleanians moved to BR). Parochialism repels outsiders - and the economic activity they bring - at a time when Louisiana desperately needs a demographic, cultural and fiscal boost.

Nepotism isn't unique to Louisiana. What is unique is the high proportion of residents that were born in the state and remain. Further concentrates this.
This is the answer. Nepotism is always prevalent in areas where there aren't people moving in and people moving out.

Im glad you're doing well. I wanted to stay in Louisiana as well. I was just sharing my personal experience, other people's expirience, and what the data suggests. I could have stayed and made $30k less a year and watched my boss' dipshit cousins get promoted over me but decided not too. It is what it is and I've grown to accept it.

I started my career doing IT for some of the Oil & Gas companies in the Lafayette. Never could get on with locally owned companies, got plenty of opportunities with a lot of the companies based in Texas and Europe.
