What do you want to do as ME? In the design/construction field it can take 5-10 years of experience to become a serviceable engineer. You may be looking at retirement by the time you become proficient, which is something the folks doing the hiring would consider.

But I also don't think I could go back today because of how so much of it is online.

I have a daughter who is going back to school and she's currently taking online classes.

I'm sure the quality of the courses varies wildly depending upon the instructor and institution, but so far I'm very unimpressed.

Schools offer these classes online but it seems that most of them do not actually develop curriculums for online instruction. So they'll throw anything up there as an afterthought or almost as a protest, it seems (I guess it's extra work for them that they don't necessarily get paid for).

My daughter has has at least one class where the instructor just downloaded a powerpoint from somewhere else—who knows from where, didn't even prepare it herself—and gave the students what seems to be the same test she gives her in-person classes. She didn't even test them on what was in the powerpoint.

Online school could be a great thing. In fact, I think we should change our public school system after about 6th grade and it should be majority online classes. But only if the curriculum is developed as such.

But even regular classes have moved a bunch online like getting and turning in assignments, etc...

Spot on. Always the old guy who asks hypothetical questions and thinks he's so smart and witty.

I think it's wonderful and you're at a good age and mindset to really soak it in. I wish i had gone to college at 40 instead of 18. I would know so much more now that i know how to learn.

Best of luck. Lean hard into it.

I am going back for an MBA at close to 50, basically out of boredom. $4k a class. Yet, you can get a journeyman HVAC certification for $4k at Wharton Community College. I'm tempted just to do that.

If you're trying to get an undergrad degree for ME, there probably won't be a lot of options for not traditional learning (online, night classes, etc.) may not be great. There is no way I would deal with 1030AM on campus classes. I dumped one uni for the MBA because they refused to tell me the class locations and schedules until close to the semester starting. I am not risking having to drive 30 miles into town at 6PM on a Tuesday, so am switching to U of H, which is all online.

After seeing that one old guy join the tiger band. I'm wanting to reenroll at LSU and do the same.

I remember there was this one dude with grey hair who lived in the dorms. I can't remember his age. Then they had straight up senior citizens in some classes.

I want to go back for a masters.

I’m not sure I could go back to college in this day and age.

I’d either get charged with some form of harassment or screw to death.

I started law school at Loyola in New Orleans last year at 51. My only regret so far is that I do not relate to many people in my class. Even though I am an evening student, the average age is still 28. I have a son older than that. I have always been considered a likeable guy wherever I went (school, work, athletics) and generally get along with everyone but no matter how hard I try I am not well liked among my classmates.
