Here's a crazy thought - why don't they stop breaking the law??? Then they don't have to worry about the cops coming after them? And when they do encounter police officers, they should smile and engage them in conversation, like most law-abiding citizens do. If you don't break the law, the chances of you getting killed by a cop goes way down.

I think OP makes some good points. I also think the war on drugs is a cash cow for departments.
I'm white and I fully support the police but their is some merit to the debtors prison premise.
I also think if people complied, we'd have a lot less bullshite.

You right NBR is a shithole with little to taxable income other than sales tax.

I agree with most of what you said about the BLM movement. But come on. That's the whole reason the cops went there. They didn't go to recruit Alton into their ponzi scheme.

I know they didn't but cops feel like they have to make arrests even if the call turns out to be bogus. They find any reason.

I don't disagree with you. There is no doubt that North BR is poor, like sections of pretty much every small city in the Southern United States.

The poverty leads to criminal behavior, just like poverty leads to criminal behavior in other poor white areas around the country (including the South).

The question that is overarching is why are there so many poor African Americans areas is virtually every city and town in the South?

I think it starts with family structure and education (or lack thereof) personally. For that to be fixed, both whites and blacks are going to have to be open, honest and not wear their feelings on their respective sleeves (and that is not going to happen).

In addressing police as revenue machines...there is absolutely no doubt they are viewed as such by parishes and counties and states, for that matter. However, they are equal opportunity revenue machines. It just so happens, they go where the crime is most likely to be. In this case, they are more likely to be on Plank Road than Highland Road.

Moreover, they would much prefer to right a ticket to someone that will pay it immediately than have to deal with payment plans...payment plans mean paperwork...paperwork means employees...they prefer to run more lean.

They actually cost the city money in reality.

It doesn't cost the city money to keep people in the system. It doesn't cost any more money to issue warrants when a payment is missed or to add another contempt fee when a fine isn't paid. It can be hard for someone living pay check to paycheck to get out from under traffic tickets.

Your assertion that the encounter between Sterling and the police was driven by money is idiotic at best. The police were called because he was waving a gun around. That has nothing to do with fines.

Your argument is basically a well-known problem that when cities levy taxes to pay for things that the middle class doesn't use the middle class leaves. Failing to invest in decent infrastructure leaves a derelict neighborhood that produces second and third generations of uneducated, low-income citizens that gravitate towards illegal activities because it's easier than working legitimately.

This is nothing new, it's been going on for over 100 years.

If you know that you cannot bring a cell phone to the court house why bring it if you do not have a place to store it? Seems to me that allowing then to store it at a small fee is done for FOR the people that do not have a vehicle. You can't say it's free to provide such storage. Someone had to pay for it. By charging it also keeps down the number of people bringing cell phones.

and then they are released. Without having to pay for anything if they're innocent.
Why is this a a foreign concept for you or is this thread really about police officers in Baton Rouge putting false charges on people?

Just about every morning on my way to work, the cops are running radar on the interstate. Maybe I should be protesting, because they are clearly targeting people who work for a living. That's one of the ways they raise revenue, though - and it is annoying, but if I'm caught speeding, I will pay my fine and move on.

What I'm saying is that IF Sterling was an angel, the police would have found a reason to arrest him.

I'm white and I live in Baton Rouge. Well not exactly Baton Rouge; Madison, MS, but still.

Anyways, while I don't agree that the only motive for arresting Alton was money, I do agree with a lot of what you said.

What about the bystanders. They were doing nothing wrong, yet they survived the encounter and didn't spend the night in jail. Please, try to sign your narrative more.
