re: Illinois police claim if marijuana is legalized, they'll have to kill their police dogs

I can train my dog to do and not do stuff he's been doing his entire life. Only takes a few minutes. He's 10.
Are they saying their dogs are too stupid to learn things? I'd like to hear from the actual K-9 trainers about it, instead of some director.
I find this odd, because the training academy stands to make tons of money on retraining

This clearly isn’t as bad as some of the issues out there but it comes from the same root issue: us vs them and we will win. It’s in a lot of police forces and in this case it’s simply manipulative but often it’s damgerous

We need to train dogs to sniff out politicians.
Pretty sure they already know how to locate piles of shite

So let me see if I understand this correctly...
Cops train a bunch of dogs to basically be machines with one purpose, and are going to guilt trip everyone else once they no longer have any use for them?
This guy can go to hell.
Idiotic, isn't it? They are basically saying " You need to keep letting us keep imprisoning people for something that is legal in many places OR we are gonna euthanize these dogs?
Huh? WTF?
The dogs can still be used in prisons pr border crossings, airports, etc.

Hell, the dogs can still be used for weed until the black market subsides.

Well that seals it for me. We must keep it illegal so we can spend even more tax dollars in law enforcement.
Think of the puppies!!!!!!!!!

I call bs on this one. I would find it hard to believe that they kill all their dogs after they retire them.
If all drugs were made legal, I would be curious to know how many law enforcement jobs would be lost. In theory, if all drugs become legal there would be little to no illegal drug activity. No need for drug dealers, etc. I honestly believe that plays a factor in why some people are against legalizing marijuana.

I do not.
How do you prove a negative?

I found a cure for blindness but didn't publish it.
Just couldn't stomach the thought of all the seeing eye dogs that would be put down. Not to mention the cane and dark-glasses makers who would be laid off.

You can show that the article contains misinformation. You called it fake news, shouldn't be hard to tell us why you say that.

Yes, the one in the OP-
this is what the police officer (Petrilli)said
quote:
"At this point, they're trained on five different odors," explained the Normal Police Department's assistant police chief, Steve Petrilli, a former K-9 handler.
"Once they're programed with that, you can't just deprogram them."
Petrilli likewise said the dogs would likely continue to live with their handlers in retirement, and in states where the drug has already been legalized, some K-9s have simply been retrained to ignore the (much more frequent) whiffs of pot.
this is what the director of the K-9 Training Academy said
quote:
Replacing the dogs would cost millions, and Chad Larner, the director of Maron County's K-9 Training Academy, said "retraining" the dogs would be "extreme abuse."
Where did the idea that they would have to kill dogs?
quote:
Marijuana advocates are skeptical about the threat. "The idea that legalizing for adults to have an ounce on them will equal ... all these dogs being euthanized, that seems kind of ridiculous and hyperbolic," the executive director of the advocacy group NORML, Dan Linn, told The Pantagraph
Just to be sure that the police officer said
quote:
Both Mendiola and Petrilli said retired K-9s in Bloomington and Normal typically continue to live with their handlers, and dismissed the idea that any would be euthanized because of retirement.
Also editor's notes
quote:
Editor's note: This article originally overstated the number of dogs that might be euthanized. It has subsequently been clarified.

Hey, nobody knows how to measure impairment when driving under the influence of marijuana!
Yippee! The drunks on the road weren't enough.

Here is a story from Radley Balko (I respect the hell outta this guy...wrote Militarization of the Police).
LINK
It links another story where a trainer (Chad Larner) gave this red herring argument about maybe having to euthanize some or most dogs that are trained (by him $$$$) to sniff pot. It is not a direct quote.
Posted on 5/8/18 at 8:15 pm to BamaCoaster
I read the original article that was linked in the page the OP posted and saw it wasn't a direct quote. It definitely detracts from the strength of the claim, but, by itself, is not evidence that it was fabricated out of whole cloth.

That’s so pathetic. I’ll adopt one.

They’ve had a lot of practice killing dogs so this shouldn’t bother them too much
