With your knowledge of today's job environment, what would you recommend to an 18 year old? What would you personally do? Let's go with 2 categories: One for Louisiana. The other anywhere else.

Huge shortage and the pay is very good
I went to trade school for Civil Engineering with a major in land surveying. Unless you are a PLS there's no money in it. I land surveyed for 4 years and went offshore surveying. Neither one pays very well. I got out of it.

LSU and a few other schools have Construction Management or Industrial Technology degrees if you want to stay in state for a time after you graduate just to get experience. Those folks are very much in demand.
Electrical Engineering
I would probably consider trade school or something and get into instrumentation. If you like it, work a while and save money. Probably can have company pay for you to go get a 4 year degree to build on this career.

I have one that age who is considering Drone Pilot School.
Pay rates are $45-$50 an hour with a FAA certification.

Add HVAC. My cousin started with one truck and himself as a solo technician. 18 years later he’s pushing $20+m in revenue with 20-25 techs and 3 FT employees. He was somewhat shunned by the immediate family and considered a “loser” for not going traditional higher education. His income is probably equal or greater than the sum of the immediate family (13 cousins, of which a handful are duds because they majored in some dumbass degree about gender studies in domestic monkeys).
I own a CPA firm and my kids will have zero pressure from me to take over because my diverse client book has shown me anyone can make $100k+ with a specialized degree or skill set worth a damn.

Engineering
Accounting
Finance
Medicine
Same thing as always. These professions will continue to evolve with technology, as they always have. I’d be terrified robotics were going to greatly decrease job availability in anything with manual labor.
Being able to think and accurately and concisely convey those thoughts has and will always be the most marketable skill

Figure out which profession best matches your aptitude and passion and pick a major that gets your foot in the door to that profession.
I do not recommend doing what I did and pick a profession based on pay with little interest. You may have a successful career but you won't be happy with your job and likely won't fulfill your potential.
If you are the best at what you do you will figure out how to make good money doing it. If you're not passionate about it; you will never be the best at what you do!

I'd go for ancient philosophy and religious studies. For work I'd have a philosophy youtube channel and sell pics of my bhole on only fans.
