re: If you instantly became a Billionaire would you fear for your safety

If I became a billionaire by winning the lottery I would try to be as secretive about it as possible. I would live a relatively modest lifestyle, establish financial security for long term (not more than I need), then I would invest in a few different type of new companies in which I will find people who need a break in life to run the companies and would donate a good bit of it or establish my own type of charity so that I will know for sure the money is being put to good use.

Get an address in another state so people think you live there. Are you responsible if your personal driver or security guard kills someone?

You would certainly have to plan ahead for the possibility of something like that.

Both in Baton Rouge and where I am now there are a number of families that are worth in the high hundreds of millions if not over a billion dollars, everyone knows who they are, where they live, what they look like. Their kids go to school, they eat out, go to shops and stores, basically do every thing a ordinary person does and without a security detail. Bill Gates could not be more well known, my son who lives in the Redmond WA area has seen him and his family doing normal family crap on numerous occasions.

lolno
This is good in theory, but I don't think in practice I can pull this off for much more than a day. Once I start interviewing tax attorneys, accountants, and nude Swedish maids it'd all be over.

Funny you say this as my wife and I had the "what if " discussion last night. How could one keep it anonymous. Your solution is a first step. But you have to know there is no way in hell someone in your family or a close friend you tell would not let it slip out at some point. I have 4 kids and we laughed that there is no way our 14 year old daughter would be able to keep it inside. She would be bursting at the seams to tell somebody. Any close friend would eventually let it slip as well at some point to someone they "trust."
We concluded we would have to not even tell our own kids if we won. But let's say you live in Mayberry, Ga. population 3,500. Let's say it was announced the winning ticket was bought at Juniors Easy Mart in Mayberry. Even though the ticket might have been bought by someone not from Mayberry, odds are it was someone around the area. Maybe in a neighboring town. At this point, damn near everybody is going to become Dick Tracy trying to solve the mystery. The people who bought from Juniors are going to try and remember who they saw in the store buying a PB ticket. If you tell any damn body (other than attorneys sworn to secrecy) other than your husband or wife( if married) it will be known. It would just be a matter of time. First step would be to form an LLC as you said but that would only work if you had not told anyone, including any kids you have.

If everyone on the OT went all in and bought every single lottery ticket last week, none of us would be billionaires
You might as well ask - If you were a caveman would you be scared of getting eaten by a T Rex

This is all fine.
I think the assumption would be that those people understand money and have had money. It's likely assumed they would know how to protect themselves, both physically and financially. I think the crazies out there would be counting on someone that won it being new to having that much money, and would assume they were an easier target.
I think it would take an idiot or a nutjob to try robbing whoever wins this, but there are plenty of those to go around.

Not at all. Billionaires can afford world class security measures.

f it's 1.3 billion, you could get about half of that lump sum, then a little over half of that after taxes... So sell your ticket to mark Cuban for a couple million less, still have hundreds of millions, remain anonymous?
I'd imagine it would probably be pretty difficult to get in touch with a billionaire like that

I think there are 6 states that will allow you to remain anonymous, but the other states will make it public.

I think you're also forgetting, as well as what was mentioned earlier, that these people are known for a reason. They have ushered in a new age of technology, own a local favorite sports team (or play on it), or in general have done something to earn that money.
You on the other hand have done nothing to earn it, and are significantly more vulnerable than them. They aren't attacked on a daily basis because they contribute something to society that everyone enjoys. You contribute nothing. You would be the biggest target imaginable.

Nobody would know if I became a billionaire overnight.

But then again I watch TWD and have a diminished opinion of human morality

If watching Lil Bow Wow in Lottery Ticket taught me nothing else, it's that you need to be careful who you share the news with.

No. I'm ex-blackwater. I would be fine.

That's why you claim it with an LLC. You check your numbers to see if they match, then set up the LLC before claiming the prize.
Sure, but if someone found out the name of the LLC, they could just look it up through the state and find out your name, your registered agent's name, and the registered agent's address.
