Sounds like a good plan. There's plenty to do in and just outside of town. Smith Rock and Newberry Volcanic Park are very close by and you might want to take a drive down the scenic byway to Mt Bachelor.

On food, I haven't been to any fine dining options since I've been living here. This is supposed to be a "foodie" town and there are plenty of options. But I'm not a fan of many of the local places that I've tried out here.

Any place where public buses do not run and no section 8 housing

The federal government will eventually find that area and build a huge apartment complex, which will eventually turn into a slum.

You'll have to move far enough out where there are few stores, public transportation etc. You'll be safe for awhile in those areas.

Northern NM.

Nice climate, dry with 4 seasons.

Mountains and some national forests nearby.

Property is not too crazy if you get away from the trendy places.

Having good internet would be the deciding factor on locale.

Somewhere in south Mississippi where good fishing can be had in fresh, brackish, and salt water. As long as everyone keeps telling folks how horrible Mississippi is, maybe I'll be able to enjoy some peace and quiet.
