Someone making $50K is going to need $100K just to keep up in a few years after Trump's spending and now Biden's promises to spend and tax.

Right, 100k in SF is roughly 50-60k in Louisiana. On top of that, it's just a different lifestyle. Some folks enjoy living in a city in an apartment where they can walk or use public transit to get around, others prefer having a larger home with a yard.

Honestly I'd venture to say it's further apart than that. When I was still in grad school and making maybe 30 a year, I could at least afford my own place, and it was honestly nicer than the apartment he shares with 2 roomates currently.

This is truth - I was driving through good ol' Start, LA the other day and there was a couple of trailer rats that were sitting outside in the midst of their best effort to recreate the set of Sanford and Son, just holding hands and happy as priest at a jr. high football game. Prolly had more money invested in alcohol for the weekend than they had in the bank, but they were happy....good for them.

I remember reading somewhere that the poverty line out there is like 84k a year. It’s insanity

It’s only true if making money is the primary motivation in your life. There are a lot of people that choose a career path knowing it would give never them a income capable of more than just meeting basic living expenses, but they are happy, and wouldn’t change jobs for 10 times the money.

I could be off, I was giving a conservative estimate. Lifestyle is going to be completely different as well. You're not getting into a 1500 sq/ft place in SF for less than 5k (probably). At the same time though, you also can live in SF without owning a vehicle. It just depends on what you value, I don't think there is an exact number that you can come up with to compare the col between the two because of that. Your home in a large city is going to be smaller, probably connected to another home (apt, condo, townhome, etc...), but at the same time you're going to be closer to amenities.

Having to work more "hours" to make 6 figures is offshore sounding.

I could easily make more money if I were willing to move. In fact I was offered a job making a 100k more than I am now, but even that much money wasn't worth living in the DC area. It's just not worth it to move to the places where I can make more money. In fact where I am now is too crowded for me.

Me too although additional WFH opportunities seem to be much more prevalent now. I don't love WFH full time but if it allowed me to live where I wanted it would be worth it. I have no desire to live in a bigger market, even for more money.

That's true with everybody. But making more money won't necessarily xlate into better living.

That was my point. To move to a large city and deal with all the bullshite that comes with it is actually a rather large drop in quality of life for me.

I have made 6 figures a few years in my life, it wasn't until after I was 30. I chose to go back to school for a better work/life balance in my 30's so now my income is ZERO figures. I was making 6 figures and chose to reevaluate my life. You can live very comfortably in Louisiana making below 6 figures, especially with two incomes in the household. My wife doesn't make 6 figures... mostly by choice, she saw what it was like when I was making good money in a field similar to what she is in now. She chooses not to take a position with more money because with that comes more time and responsibility. She got just high enough to be in charge when she is at work but not have to be the person that answers for everything, and she is close enough to six figures that one income is comfortable for us. When we both have jobs, I am honestly considering just saving 100% of my check for a few years, I guess it depends on what the economy looks like the next 2 years on what I will do.

I'll be 30 in a few years and more than likely I won't be pulling in 6 figures just yet. I feel just fine and happy with my life, but maybe I need to get to reevaluating apparently.

Of course it's wrong. Was Mother Theresa's life a waste?
