to be fair, agency and travel work for nurses has been around far longer than covid.
It just wasn't as utilized near as much as it is now. Nurse's are burned out with hospital greed and are realizing they can do the same work for better pay working for an agency rather than working directly for the hospital.
This problem isn't going to change anytime soon bc hospital corporations as a whole, aren't willing to adjust the pay rate for staff nurses.
I am not saying that in every market/location the pay should be 169$/hr or whatever, but it does need to increase.

The entire point of a union is to not compete for wages with your coworker.
I don’t want someone who is looking after my health to basically not get fired because they don’t have to even try. And why not just move to where they are paying nurses more? Kind of defeats the purpose if they are paying 8x more in another area. Because your union reps ain’t getting you $169/hr in Louisiana.

How bad is the shortage in CA?
Anyone with knowledge. California has strong nursing unions and highest cost of living with state income tax etc etc.
That 169 is still a good wage but it balances out. Tell a bunch of folks in struggling states like Louisiana it turns heads. Also location. I got a text offer (get them daily) for travel jobs. One was Ventura California which a quick glance of map location seemed beautiful?? Other location were inland. Or south and inland. Palm Springs in the summer probably ain’t the best.

this is what it is going to take to get nursing pay up where it needs to be.
and sadly, it is at the ultimate expense to the patients. there are so many young, inexperienced nurses at the bedside these days, being trained by other young inexperienced nurses.
While I still work ICU part time because I truly love that type of nursing, I left that position as my primary job, to be paid better and have less stress.
